We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The vikings had better luck going east and south rather than west. Oh yes, they had slaves too. White ones. "Slavs" often, which is the origin of the word.
Different groups of slaves there. They took Irish slaves for wives when they settled Iceland, plus some English and Normans back to Norway. The Swedes went down the rivers picking up slaves to sell in the Mediterranean. They picked some up coming back as well, which is likely how I got an mtDNA of U3. Though that could have been eastern European gypsies a few centuries later instead.
They traded them, not keeping many. A few of the wealthy would have a slave or two, with only a few agricultural places in Skane having more.

Dublin was founded as a Viking slave trading center.
The Norsemen were quite successful. Having taken half of Britain, to be pushed back, to again take ground. To rule England as Canute did. Then, a band bought off with land in what is now France, they settled to become Normans from Normandy. Then these Normans took England in 1066.
Of course, while the leaders were Norse, Vikings were a diverse group of pirates of many stations and nationalities.
The word Slav is a self-designation, not a title imposed by other languages. In Slavic languages, Slav=Slovo (meaning "word" or "speaking" or "legend told") and also Slav=slavnyi (meaning "nice"). It did not derive from a Latin or English root. The Slav = slaves is one of those historical myths that derive from similar sounding words, but is not true.

Historical myth; Like Trump lost and Biden won. Yeah I see what you mean.
They did indeed sail westward, and founded a colony at what is now called "l'Anse aux Meadows" at the northern tip of what is now Newfoundland. There is talk that the Vikings did venture south, but this is their only known settlement.
