We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I remember seeing a good documentary about the Russo-Finnish war in my childhood. Lots of snow. As I had friends of Finnish extraction, the Finn's valiant fight was something I could relate to.
I also knew people whose childhood in Estonia was ended by Stalin's occupation, followed by the Nazi invasion and then Stalin's reoccupation of Estonia. At least they and their families were able to get out.
My grandparents immigrated to the USA from Finland. Many stories when I was a kid about the relatives and family friends who died and those who survived the Winter War. Some good short books about the Winter War have been translated from Finnish to English.
