We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I suppose it would be possible to come up with a better plan to destroy black academic performance than by telling black students not to worry about getting the right answer to a math problem, but I can’t think what it would be.
Many people have trouble getting their minds into the logic and language of math at different levels. It takes focus and concentration, like learning a language.
I would like to see a correlation between lanquage skills and math skills. Intuitively, I doubt there is one. The linguists I've encountered didn't come across as skilled mathematicians, and vice versa.
I know a middle school math teacher who teaches in a 'less than desirable' school. She has noted that she can identify the drug street runners in her class instantly. They are the only ones who can do basic math.
This is going to be difficult. Math ability is largely genetic, as are the abilities to focus on a problem or to hold one number off to the side while you do a second calculation.
For this reason, the kids that are not that good at math can only be taught by drill and repetition. Insight is useless. But education schools are determined that drill is bad, and literally anything else must be used to teach all subjects, including math.
Also, there is no evidence that inspirational or motivational tactics are any good in most subjects, and have even been found to be an additional problem (because they are a distraction, increase anxiety, and increase guilty feelings) in math and science.
Lastly, the type of math that males, including black males, are better at is spatial, which is the weakest category of math for the women who are teaching school. They therefore do not even pick up who might have an interesting ability that could be turned into something useful because they don't even recognise it themselves.
So to fix this the schools will have to admit that
1) the races are On AVERAGE not equal in mathematical ability
2) their preferred method of teaching does not work and the thing they dislike most does work
3) their main fallback of being encouraging can make things worse as often as it makes them better, depending on the "encouragement," and
4) not only classroom teachers but the faculty and research arms of the ed schools will have to be taught the rudiments of spatial knowledge and be trained to look for it.
How likely is this?

I hope the IRS will keep this enlightened approach to math in mind if they audit my tax return. But if things go pear-shaped, be assured I shall select a defense attorney randomly, with no regard for "objective" standards such as law-school grades, cases won, or spell-check error counts on the defense brief. Gotta virtue up.
Again, the soft bigotry of low expectations. This is more damaging to young black students than keeping them out of school altogether.
I have no idea what these sol-called educators think they are teaching but it is not math. These kids are in for a real nasty surprise when they hit the real world. They will soon find out that your employer expects the right answer, show your work if need be, and f**k your feelings.
A more sinister program to keep black youth oppressed could not have been dreamed up by the Klan.
Math is racist, rote learning is bad. Going on a long time, back in the 80s I learned 1 night at supper that my third grade son had no idea what multiplication tables were. I told my fourth grade daughter “ tell your brother what 4x7 is “ she sat for a minute , thinking. “28 “ she said big smile. I said why so long to get the answer ? She was adding in her head. Good at it too.
Mean old dad strikes again. “Anyone who can’t do their twotums at supper tomorrow gets a lick.” Didn’t take long to tentums .
The really said part ,is almost every year when asked in math class “Who know their multiplication tables ?” One hand went up .
