Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, December 23. 2020New York vs FloridaFriends of mine have barraged me with commentary on the "disaster" that Florida is, particularly with regard to Covid. Anecdotally, I was told urban (and this seems to confirm) ICUs typically range from 55-80% full at any given time, depending on seasonality. The current occupancy rates, in some places, are in the 90s, so while that is very high, it's worth noting ICUs are usually very full. The real concern is the ability to expand, as needed. I believe, based on the response in April, this is something our system can handle fairly effectively. I'm not being too relaxed or naive. I'm not diminishing or putting down the efforts of our medical personnel. I am applauding them for their efforts, their hours, their professionalism, and creativity as they have found many solutions and treatments along the way to help mitigate and ease many of these issues. That is the beauty of not only our medical system, but our overall economic system. Flexibility and ingenuity. Our friend the Manhattan Contrarian has presented his excellent piece on why Florida has made New York look silly and misguided in the midst of all this. I doubt the media will present the story as MC has. I applaud our friend MC for presenting the facts. After all, he lives near the center of the echo chamber. I'll toss in one more point of comparison - New Jersey, which like NY has similar governance, though a much smaller population (8.9mm) than Florida (21.5mm) and New York (19.5mm). Covid cases have reached 440k in NJ, about in line with where Florida is as a percentage, but it has almost 19k deaths - similar to Florida (older and with a larger population). Comparatively speaking, New York City alone has roughly the same population as New Jersey, but has had roughly the same number of cases as New Jersday (390k) and more deaths (24k). "Follow the science" is a real thing, but not the way Progressives present it. For them, it's really "Follow the politics, which pretends to be science."

A number of leftist news media in Florida hate DeSantis and are constantly trying to make him and our state government response look bad. In Florida we live a normal life, unlike in the northern gulags. The left hates that we expose their lies just by living our normal lives.
Gee, if it's so terrible here in Florida, why is it that I-95 South is absolutely clogged with vehicles sporting license plates from Northern Maoist Paradise states? Why are so many people from those Democrat meccas moving here? Believe me, we don't want them if they are going to vote for the same Leftists which have made their northern states into rusted out, litter filled, crime-ridden hellholes.
As for the contrived disaster portrayal, I happen to work in the funeral sector, which the Department of Homeland Security has classified as healthcare. Not only are we not overwhelmed, we haven't been, and also the total amount of deaths has been running below average. I realize it suits the agenda of the Maoist Media to let viewers perceive that there are dead bodies lining the sidewalks but that simply is not even close to the truth. Governor DeSantis has a goal of getting everyone in healthcare and assisted living facilities vaccinated by the end of December and he may achieve that. I wouldn't say New York looks silly and misguided; I think the words "sinister" and "malicious" are much more apt. Thanks for letting me know that our state is a "disaster" as I go about my daily business and try not to watch the news, If it's so bad maybe all those New York license plates will go home and take their politics with them. Gov DeSantis is under a lot of pressure to be like California or New York but he knows what makes things work.
I am from Ohio and living under DeWine. I was in FL (St Pete) the weekend before Thanksgiving for a wedding. My wife and I, with my son, daughter and her husband, walked along the St Pete pier, had dinner in downtown St Pete (Fresco's) and ice cream at The Don CeSar. For the first time in my life I could honestly feel the sensation of freedom. Good for Gov DeSantis.

They're also big on "evidence-based policy". Of course, first they must collect the "policy-based evidence". Friends of mine have barraged me with commentary on the "disaster" that Florida is, particularly with regard to Covid.
I suspect those same friends think Gov. Cuomo has been doing a fantastic job with regard to Covid. Sounds like my NYC cousin, but she has at least begun to realize that Mayor Bill isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread. One step at a time......
I was stationed at Hurlburt Field (Fort Walton Beach) for six years and stay in touch with friends there and at USSOCOM headquarters in Tampa. Whoever is barraging you with tales of "disaster" in Florida due to Covid is full of crap.
Of course they are. My in-laws live in FL and have said the same. I'm aware of the reality.
The problem is the NY/LA centric media is out of touch and never will be in touch. It's about spreading lies, and whatever misconsceptions they can to pursue their agenda. Ah, but Florida is being invaded by sewage from the Big Craphole. And you can bet they are bringing their politics WITH them!!!
They might regret it when hunting season opens on 20 January... I’m a nurse. A while back I took care of a patient and his wife who had flown in from Florida for health care. Originally from NY, they had moved to Florida a few years back. The patient needed some therapy after discharge so I asked if they were headed back to Florida. The wife was adamant: Absolutely not she said. DeSantis belongs in jail she said. Florida was out of control and all of those deaths were “his fault.” He was inept, totally making a disaster out of an already bad situation.
I could not believe what she was saying. But I can not say anything because my only job is to provide healthcare to anyone who shows up. I don’t want to introduce politics into my care. But this woman was totally ignoring the evidence. I realize that those of us on the right are supposed to be the science deniers but on that day, Florida had HALF the number of deaths NY had. I desperately wanted to ask her if she would feel safer in NY where twice as many people had died but I bit my tongue. The bottom line: The left is not remotely interested in real science, real analysis. They only want to cram their will down our throats. If actual science supports their view, great. If it doesn’t, they don’t care. They will dispense with evidence faster than you can blink and move directly toward brute force. |
