Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Broadway talent

Broadway talent is astonishing. Broadway is dead right now, and will be back eventually. 


This bit of Jonathan Groff shows what I mean. True, totally unfair to the king and Brit politics of the time, but how good is this?

Hamilton is based on the biographical tome Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, winner of the George Washington Book Prize. (Chernow was somewhat surprised his book was turned into a hit Broadway musical. Not what he was expecting!)

Finally watched "Hamilton" the other night. Overall I liked it, am a big fan of musicals, but I really don't understand the buzz and accolades it received. We had to turn on the subtitles as it was very difficult to pick up the dialogue without them.

The wordplay is complex, but is an essential part of the art. Like much great art, it has to be savored. Many fans, such as the young girl for whom the zoom performance was staged, can recite all the words.

The opening number (linked above, #2) compresses the first 20 years of Hamilton's life into three minutes. It's the story of a poor, young immigrant from the Caribbean. You can feel the youthful ambition and optimism in the music and words, as he arrives, where "in New York, you can be a new man."
