We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The central liberal truth is that politics can and has changed our culture. Observe that cultural Marxism has, as its focus, victimhood of an oppressed group and you owe them everything you have and that is still not enough...humiliation is also required. Moynihan recognized cultural problems but always delivered a vote for the progressive solution. There is no solution from those who follow the heaven on earth doctrine but they will keep politicking for the untying of the Gordian knot of equality of outcome...and require plenty of elbow room at the taxpayer trough.
Re: “the central liberal truth is that politics can change a culture and save it from itself”
Of the several problems with that view, here is one of the biggest: politics attracts f*cked-up sociopaths with mad power dreams who then proceed to go WAY too far with their allegedly awesome culture-fixing plans.
Leftist ideology itself obviously is problematic, but the people drawn to it who run for office are the worst.
There are no conservatives. Old people want to change society to benefit them. High taxes, with plenty of social security and medicaid to give them a good life. If you notice, there is no conservative platform which details how wealth transfer to the younger generations will be achieved. That's because the elderly have no intention of helping younger generations. The want it all. But the idea itself is correct: Culture is much more important than politics. That's why politics can't tolerate the competition of culture. So leftists try to make the claim that all culture is evil. Read this:
“Unconscious bias includes using language, symbolism and nonverbal cues that reinforce normative social identities with respect to gender, race, sexual preference and socioeconomic status,” Bonomi said. “For example, when the virtual background of a Zoom meeting attendee has pictures of his or her wedding, it unintentionally reinforces the idea that marriage is most fitting between opposite sexes.”
Even the most basic cultural references are becoming taboo.
Don't show a picture of a wedding! That's homophobic. https://davidthompson.typepad.com/davidthompson/2020/05/their-happiness-hurt-my-feelings.html We need a new definition of conservatism which explicitly states that the elderly should help the young, and that institutions like church and marriage are important. For specific reasons. Conservatives need a mandate which can be read and understood by everyone.
This post is definitely worthy of an "Okay, Boomer". The America of 1970 had roughly the demographics of Norway or Finland. The America of 2020 bears no relation whatsoever to the American of 1970. These might as well be foreign countries.
These liberal/conservative ideological battles were an intellectual luxury that can be afforded in a demographically homogeneous country, but they are meaningless in the polyglot empire that is modern day America. Like it or not, we're now a tribal society.
