We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It is way too soon to know if this was over blown. Already over 50,000 dead and not all old. This is clearly not just another "flu". Can we stay locked up for months? No and some areas may be ready now to relax but even in NY where the spread appears widest, a large population remains open to infection so any steps should be measured and evaluated for resurgence before moving further. It may be that many of the deaths were simply moved forward but that will only be knowable next year and even if they were who is ready to take responsibility for shortening them?
It ain't over so we don't know what the final total will be but clearly it will surpass everything except 1918. I agree we need to start to get back to something resembling normal but I find the certainty expressed in the article to be the ravings of a naif or a fool.
Maybe. I assume that South Dakotians are not all immune to this virus and sooner or later they will get the same average infections and deaths as those places which were hit earlier. It may not be headline worthy, we may never see a headline that thousands of South Dakota residents died from it. Unless South Dakota's black population is affected more, of course. But more than likely South Dakota will be roughly equally harmed by this virus.
