Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Tuesday, April 14. 2020ReparationsI was speaking with a friend, prior to the lockdown, about Covid and the political repercussions. His view was the politicians would overreact/overreach for one reason - demographics. He believed, and this is now proving to be correct, that the black population would be disproportionately hit. There are higher incidences of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, alcoholism - all at-risk traits. As a result, there'd be a need to try to 'protect' these people and manage the data. They did a good job with the data, but as usual, you can't hide the truth all the time. These at-risk traits are the natural result of bondage to the state. As the US moved heavily to institutionalize all kinds of state aid to 'lift up' a downtrodden people, the government created a permanent underclass that is in thrall to the state, and engaging more irresponsible behaviors as a result (please note, I'm not saying black people are irresponsible - this is true of people of many ethnicities who have become multi-generational recipients of state aid). Taking responsibility for one's life is hard, and it's hard work. The state can step in and solve all that for you, though. Free health care, free food, free homes. It's good stuff, if you can get it. You can even become a 'Covid Patriot' full time by just going along with state aid. So it's no surprise to see calls for 'reparations' for Covid hitting the black population so hard. Yes, they have suffered more. I'm not sure the survivors deserve 'reparations' though. After all, it's hit men disproportionately, too. Perhaps we can have calls for Covid reparations for men?

This is certainly the time to ask for reparations, when trillions are being thrown around like chump change. What more can a little more spending hurt at this point?
Please stop posting, you truly are a horrible person...
Ps - smoking and Coronavirus, do a little research on the most recent studies You do realize I can delete your comment and write back to you on your (masked) email, right?
Your comments, however, have become increasingly personal. I would suggest making a creative and thoughtful comment. Latest studies support me. https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/04/studies-smoking-age-other-factors-raise-risk-covid-19-death https://www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-on-smoking-and-covid-19 https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/06/opinions/smoking-vaping-covid-19-coronavirus-maa/index.html https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/what-smokers-should-know-about-covid-19/ So yeah - maybe you should rethink posting personal attacks. That's all. But if you keep it up, I'll just delete you in the future. Bulldog? If you are a "horrible person" then we need more horrible people.
Thanks. I don't really mind being called names. I just don't see the point here. It was one of my many problems with Zach. His sly turns of phrase may have been lost on others, but not on me. He loved a good personal attack, he was just creative about it.
Zach. Heh.
Zach argues just like my wife does. She's an admitted lib and the similarities to her way of arguing and Zach's are striking. I have said before that one of the really cool things about MF is that the commenters generally mind their manners. I would hate to see this type of vitriol take hold here. People are firmly dug in on both sides of the coronavirus debate. I think frustration is running high. I still hope everyone is friends here/are friends here? (I need help from the grammar police.). Even friends can disagree.

A good friend of mine said today "Even if you agree with the shut down, you should HOPE there are people opposing it. I'm all for herd immunity, I'm opposed to herd mentality."
He was a supporter until the most recent numbers started coming in. Now he realizes it's a scam and has flipped. He's starting to realize scare tactics work on the weak...and we tend to give the weak more attention (as any good nation should). It's easy to manipulate people if you really have the desire and wherewithal to do so.

Speaking of at-risk "traits"
https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/comments/g0zyk5/rochester_ny_mayor_warren_says_sunday_vigil/ The black culture is also one of extended family, hanging out together and greeting friends even those who you do not know well. Early on in this crisis most people were not taking it seriously and close contact with a lot of people was guaranteed to spread the disease.
When racism is the first thought that comes to mind it pretty much nullifies everything else that person has done. It is obvious to anyone with more than a few brain cells that America is one of the least racist countries AND that the race baiting here is 100% about gaining power or $$. On March 20th my wife and I self quarantined and have not visited anyone. I have even cancelled medical appointments even though I have some serious health issues. I still fully expect to get C-virus I'm just kicking the can down the road. My father (retired doctor, high blood pressure, respiratory issues), self quarantined in February, after I'd gotten sick the first time (thought it was Covid then, but then I got Covid a month later).
It's what you do if you're at risk. Makes sense. You employ boatloads of caution. My last extended contact was March 13 - when the wife and I went to see the Wolfe Tones at a small bar in Manhattan with my brother-in-law. There were no lockdown rules in effect at that point, though my work had sent us all home the day before. The extended family is a good point - Italy suffered quite a bit because of the multi-generational household. Young and asymptomatic, they'd carry the disease to the older folks at home. No surprise there, really. Italy had quite a bit going against it. Smokers, age, very light flu season, etc. I agree on racism and the US. We are very open about our problems. And our problems are not nearly as bad as other nations I've lived in. Britain tends to gloss over theirs, Denmark too (less so black people there, mostly the Greenlanders who are treated poorly). Every nation has issues - the real question is how you confront them. We do so openly and, to a large degree, honestly (though most of the "RACIST!" types today are not honest in the least). The black family is an unmarried mother with children from more than one absent father. This is the pattern in Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil, and the US. It is genetic, and it evolved in the conditions of Africa where food is readily available year round, and a live in husband is unnecessary. In Eurasia, food is only available seasonally, and its collection requires both men and women, bonded together.
Reparations can only be transport back to Africa. Reparations for black folks? If they're going to do that, make sure NO ONE sticks that label on it (fat chance). Otherwise, a large chunk of the non-black population will forever look back on that payout and say, right or wrong, "You got yours, now STFU about slavery and racism and pore little ol' me. Nobody wants to hear that crap ever again."
Reparations qua reparations will deprive the black community of the only plausible claim they have on whites. Once that's gone... Wait a sec... a "bull" and "bird" post threw same am? Wonderful! A sense of balance is returned to the universe...
All discussions of group behavior should include consideration of genetics. Neither liberals nor conservatives want to do that, both having narratives they like better.
Once you crack open that door, it's amazing what you find. World ends by plague; women, children and minorities hardest hit.
My proposal is to slap a penalty on people who live in densely populated cities with mass transit, for their role in spreading a dangerous pathogen, then pay them an exactly equal amount in reparations for exposing themselves heroically in service of Gaia.
