We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Cool and cold weather shooting gloves


A hunting pal and I both have a touch of Raynaud's, so bird hunting when it's below 35 F can become painful and incapacitate a trigger finger after a couple of hours. In New England in grouse country, it's usually below 40 in November.


Generally, Raynaud's is not a problem with good fleecy gloves, but you can not do shotgun shooting with those. Bulky gloves do not fit through a trigger guard, at least quickly, and are not right for holding a firearm firmly.

Assuming we have some upland hunters among our readers, what do you like use use?

I use wool short-finger gloves from Cabela's for bird hunting in Colorado.

Late season pheasant hunting in Minnesota can be really cold. This year I'm using Mechanix gloves and overall they're the best I have found. Trigger-finger tip sensitivity is very good. And the fingers fit tight enough that they don't hang up on the trigger guard. Couple negatives: The velcro wrist strap is superfluous and hinders quick removal. As for warmth, they're better than nothing but very poor for insulation and heat retention.

I have some of the Under Armour Cold Gear gloves. What I like best is that I always feel like I have a solid grip on my shotgun; easy flexibility.

Plain old brown cotton jersey gloves. They are cheap and you don't have to worry about losing them. You can carry a spare pair in your pocket so if they get wet you can switch. And if you lose them you are only out a dollar. If you are following a dog you are probably moving enough to keep warm. If that offends you and you are a deer hunter, have a made-to-order pair made from your deer hide--you won't be disappointed.

The best thing I found for cold weather shooting was to wear Thinslate glove liners, which by themselves were thin enough for good trigger control, and then either wear mittens over those (really cold weather) or extra-large gloves. When shooting time comes, remove the mitten/glove and shoot with the Thinsulate liner. Works great.

There are special pop top mittens or bulky gloves with an opening you can extend your finger through. 35-40 isn’t that cold where I am, but I do break them out when it drops below zero.

While pheasant hunting here in South Dakota, I wear a jersey glove on my gun swinging hand and keep my trigger hand bare. My trigger hand goes in a coat pocket with a chemical hand warmer. As rocdoc notes above, the exertion required to keep up with these crazy birds keeps you warm enough, even hunting in snow and wind.
