Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

At first I didn't get what that expression was supposed to mean. Now I get it. It's what an immature young person says when they can't think of a smart-sounding insult. It speaks to a lack of an intelligent vocabulary.
As a member of Gen X, I'm just over here enjoying my popcorn.
You and me both, brother. And also my parents, who are the "Silent Generation".
Many of my peers were raised by the Silent Generation, but I was blessed/cursed with mid-to-late boomer parents. (Let's just say I was at my mother's HS graduation.) This meant I was left to raise myself and my brother. I'm not complaining though. I just basically did the opposite of what I saw my parents doing and it has served me well.
It just gives me the giggles. Those who name-call probably don't have any coherent arguments to offer.
Agreed that it's a weak replacement for any actual argument, but I find it tiresome rather than funny.
Annoying? Im 68 and I think it's funny. It's the equivalent of "OK, Gramps" which I would use on occasion and of course I thought I was hilarious.
If you get annoyed by that, it's apparently effective. Got it, Boomer? Just respond with "No Problem, Whiner". The research shows that they (the Millennials) are narcissistic, lazy and coddled with a tendency to jump from job to job - no staying power which will work out badly for them in the long run since they can't advance or build up equity by moving to a new job - but of course they think they should start at the top anyway. I think the comment just shows how envious they are, but they don't see all the hard work that went into the person achieving that position.
Cracks me up, especially coming from some broke-ass hipster. Hell, give me time, and I'll show him all my Official Geezer cards (Medicare, Bus Pass, etc.)
My husband thinks (but usually won't say out loud), "Have fun paying for my retirement."
Said to my face I would find it amusing. Said behind my back I wouldn't know about it and so wouldn't have a reaction.
Shrug, been there, done that. 'Don't trust anyone over 30.', etc., etc.
@7 Steve:
Mostly I find it amusing. I've been using, "Whatever, Millie" JWM I cured my smart alecky 29 year old son of saying that by replying back to everything he said to me with "Ok, Boomer" for a week. Haven't heard him say it once since. Seems I ruined the fun of it. Too bad.
My 16yo turned me onto this. I noted that her generation was never ashamed to share their inexperience with us.
I revel in my boomer grumpiness, just like old-timers did when I was feeling my oats and being a smart-ass. You want to identify me by generation, have at it. I'll just say, "OK, well it's obvious I'm a boomer - what's your excuse, Snowflake?" Payback with compounded interest is a requirement in cross-generational trash talk.
To me it is a vocal statement that the speaker is clueless about the issue and reflexively resents someone older and wiser implying they are ignorant. Anyone with a good knowledge of the issues could refute the "boomers" objection and would appear confident and informed. But by choosing a mindless ride insult they appear childish.
As a Boomer mom to two millennials, I find it hilarious! Our Boomer generation was criticized mercilessly when we were their age. Millennials whether hard working or lazy also get lumped together and the pile on is just as annoying as when it happened to us. So to those who take great umbrage at this comeback, I say “OK Boomer”! Our generation may continue to be so annoying that they may just turn us all into soylent green.

It just doesn't compare to some of the other things I've been called (i.e., Nazi, baby killer, Hell's Angel). Its supposed to be.
But mostly it irritates me with the ignorance displayed by the user - most of the time the people they're calling 'boomers' are genXers. Actual boomers aren't spending a lot of time on the internet, let alone social media. Oh,I guess I am a real Boomer. Lots of descendants. Lots of time on the internet. None of them has said it to me yet.
They wouldn't dare. Gramma is too mouthy to be much fun. |
