We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The questions become; what triggers the process to create the gene structure, which is tailored to overcome a specific circumstance and what provides the correct recipe for the change?
In our lifetimes, several examples of speciation to meet a newly confronted problem, have been observed.
As example, one migratory bird species passing through the UK, has evolved a different wing shape which enables them to hover efficiently, at bird feeders. This new species is distinct from and can't reproduce with its parent species.
When I was in school the theory was that some "evolutionary" changes were sudden and possibly caused by radiation from sources in space. Logically some or all of these changes would be made at the gene level.
Information Theory has shown that the odds for random mutation producing the complexity of life are wildly unlikely. There's just too much information to be explained and all deeper research is discovering is the presence and effects of yet more and more information. There is only One logical explanation for all this overwhelming quantity of information, but this must never be allowed put a foot in the door.
What you say "seems" reasonable if you are simply ignorant of how life evolved and how much time it took. It would indeed seem impossible that some of the more sophisticated components of life forms to just happen by chance. But that isn't what science is saying. In the example of genetic changes caused by radiation from space for example what the theory is; is that a million or a billion different life forms are changed in some significant way. And that out of a million different random changes, 999,999 of them are not viable and that life form dies but 1 of those changes is awesome and that lifeform excels. And this may have happened a million different times over the billions of years that it took to create life.
There really is no other logical explanation which is why the alternative explanation always resorts to superstition and voodoo. The major fault with the creation theory is that it would take a super powerful being to do all this "creating" and it begs the question; who created the super powerful being??? It reminds me of the cartoon where a mathematician has a entire blackboard covered with a complex equation and then has "and here a miracle occurs" to get the answer.
