Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: Deadly Diseases From Library Books
I saw a funny thing yesterday while shopping in a high end retail area. A guy covered his hand with his shirttail to avoid touching a door handle going into a store, germ phobic I guess. Got t a doctor out here ith the Wild west who encourages people to challenge their immune systems :"Drop that food on the floor? Eat it anyway!"
Says our immune systems get weaker, if not regularly challenged to fight off relatively harmless bugs present EVERYWHERE in our environment. Thus, when a nasty disease bug shows up, our stronger immune system can rise to the occasion of fighting off the bad bug. Common sense has always told us "if it don't kill you, it'll make you stronger!" Modern day germophobes, take heed! Yes, folks, STEP RIGHT UP and getchercher SCARE right here while it's hot and I've still got a few left!
It's not library books that are the problem anymore.
It's the touchscreen office finder in the lobby of the local hospital being played with by the kid with one finger in his nose that's the problem. I don't know about public library books spreading deadly diseases, but I know a lot of college textbooks do. Unfortunately, the college professors and administrators are willfully spreading the infection and there's no simple inoculation against it. On the other hand, graduation and an introduction to the real world seems to have a fairly high cure rate as long as the afflicted person isn't kept confined to Mom's basement or other sheltered areas.

Correct! We would also have accepted buying a recorder and a copy of the music and lyrics to "Frozen".
I am so happy with Trump's effort to stop China from screwing us over. Think about this: The worst possible result of a trade war with China is all those jobs come back to the U.S. I assume it won't end that well. Most likely China will wait until Biden is president and he will sell out his country for a few million.
Speaking of a few million; when do we investigate Obama. Does anyone believe Obama's memoirs are worth $65 million??? Who is paying him off and for what??? re Top 10 Ways Wood Pellets Beat Firewood
Biggest advantage of firewood? It's cheap. I am only out the cost of the saw and my time. Fitness program.
Firewood heats you twice. Once while your cutting it. Then while burning it. I have heated with wood. I still do a little but for the pleasure of the stove. It is warmer and more pleasant than other forms of heat. Where I live there are half a million cords of wood laying on the ground in every square mile. You can't give it away. It is pine, burns fast and can put some creosote in your chimney. But it is free.
Disney: I don't expect to see another of their movies ever again.
When they fired all their IT staff and imported H1B workers from India they lost me.
Michael Drejka was found guilty of manslaughter in Florida. There is a lot of commentary to this story both sides of the argument. I think that they are missing something. In other incidents like this where a drug using bully thug attacked someone in this way, knocking them to the ground, the very next thing that happened was a kick to the head of the prostrate victim. The attacker was exactly the right distance away to deliver a goal kick. It would take about a second to do it. The difference this time was the assault victim had a gun and used it in self defense. Should he have? Or should he have allowed himself to become the human football. I am reminded of Reginald Denny. He was permanently harmed when he was hit in the head with a brick. If he had a gun he could have saved himself all that suffering. But would he have then been put in jail for life?
Anyone who has been to Florida knows that any 7-11, store or strip mall is populated by people looking to hurt, or rob someone. They are doing drugs or are drunk and they don't like you and see you as a possible target. Much worse after dark. If attacked, can you defend yourself? What if Mr. Drejka did not have a gun? The attacker was high on numerous drugs and was bigger, stronger and angry. What is your guess? Would he have been satisfied with throwing the much smaller man to the ground or would he have walked away. What if the victim in this assault had been a policeman would the policeman have shot his attacker? If he did would the prosecutor charge him with manslaughter? Somehow I don't think Mr. Drejka got justice. |
