All too gloomy in my view. The good life is not so elusive. Love thy neighbor, etc, and quit focusing on oneself. The Lord will not judge us on our earthly achievements. It's like the Eulogy vs. Resume thing when you die.

As a farmer at 55, undertaking a major (lateral) expansion for the younger generations, I can relate. I'd be able to do so much more physically if I was 10 years younger.
But I wouldn't have the 10 years of experience I get to apply.
They don't let me do physical shifts if they can help it (you might slow it down, we'll have to work harder to catch up).
But also because they realize: if you drop dead or get tired of the game and quit, we're all out of work. We have mutual benefit.

Barrister - thanks for the Atlantic link. I'm 56, earning a doctorate (finally), and working on a career transition from management to Christian Ed. Didn't know why the decision to do that a few years ago settled my spirit so much. Now I do. Blessings, Bull
