We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
problem is, the PC/SJW infection has spread way beyond the soft sector and into STEM.
"Climate science" is just the tip of the iceberg. Physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, all have been corrupted to the point anything that doesn't match with the far left anti-science agenda is taboo.
I heard a talk >20 years ago from a Bio professor who was concerned about "post modernism" destroying his field. He made a compelling case, but didn't appreciate that the props used to support evolutionary theory are precisely post-modern.
All of these leftist causes, PC, post modernism, feminism, etc are directed at taking down Western Civilization. They corrupt the institutions of W. Civ and let them implode.
That includes the humanities (nearly complete), natural philosophies (Bio, Chem, Physics, Meteorology) and the University (a W. Civ creation that teaches these).
More precisely, the attack is on Christendom, the foundation of W. Civ
Nah. They’ll do great. Corporate America loves that garbage, and higher ed owns a monopoly on the ticket to a “good job” in corporate America. That’s why corporate America loves that garbage so much: Corporate America is run by people who’ve gone through the indoctrination course.
We handed education over to psychopathic Maoists who want us exterminated, who want our sons castrated and wearing a dress, and our daughters pulling a train. Conservatives said “oh, it’s just those crazy eggheads in colleges; what influence do they have? Oh by the way, my daughter got into Yale!”
The next step is you paying off all the student loans, so the colleges can double their prices again and hire more political commissars. It’s the free market! Liberty!
I agree with Wilbur. For some time, universities have been in the business of networking and credentialing. That business looks to be good forever.
Small colleges are a different story. The number of 18 year-olds, especially those with college level IQs, is declining. With the loss of their customers, many small colleges are going out of business. Someone estimated half will close.
I wonder how much of this is less an extinction event as a reversion to the mean. From 1945-85 there were three related trends that led to the huge buildup in the educational establishment: The GI Bill, the women's movement, and the baby boom all led to a large spike in the number of students attending colleges and universities. At the same time, technology had revolutionized the practice of, and thus the teaching requirements for, the hard sciences. Physics and engineering departments needed labs; astronomy departments needed telescopes, chemistry departments needed all manner of things; humanities needed a box with a chalkboard.
Thus humanities departments could be built fast and cheap, often with one or two notable professors forming a seed and a bunch of newly minted PhDs rounding out the faculty. So there was a generation that was pushed through in to graduate programs to fill these niches, but when the inevitable demographics crash came, the system continued to crank out product for which there were no buyers.
