Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Tuesday, March 26. 2019After two or three years of fake news, what are Journalists?
Fake image via Powerline Instapundit has this meme: "If you consider reporters as Democrat operatives with bylines, a lot of things make sense." Has it become a new normal that "journalists" have come to view themselves as advocates rather than as reporters? In some ways, Trump has removed the veil. I recall how the press protected Obama and Hillary from all of their errors and misdoings, while anything Trump does is wrong. Maybe you can say that "journalists" see their role as "to make the world better" - by shaping opinion to fit their own. That is fake news, not reporting. Historically, we view it as propaganda. The arrogance is mind-boggling. My suspicion is that journalists suffer from inferiority feelings because their role is essentially to be observers of things rather than actors, but if you can see yourself on a noble mission to fix the world in your own image, you can feel heroic instead of passive. You not only have the power to frame reality - you have the power to shape it. Bringing down a President would be a great coup. Trump's public life will never be free of a Russia taint regardless of reality. Journalism Dies In Self-Importance Taibbi: As the Mueller Probe Ends, New Russiagate Myths Begin

re After two or three years of fake news, what are Journalists?
Only two or three years? No. It's been going on much longer than that. What has changed is how much more pervasive and blatant the fake stories have become. Has this hurt the credibility of the media? Only at the margins, I think. People have long since decided rather a source is credible or not. The disintegration of the collusion story changes nothing. The very same tactics will be used going forward. This was simply the end of another episode. Coordinated efforts go back to at least Dan Rather--he was the first that really got caught fabricating "news" for political purposes. He's been rehabilitated by the Fakestream Media, by the way.
I don't know. I don't think the Tet Offensive, for example, was accurately reported (and it was unlikely to be a mistake). And while it's not directly to your point, there was Uncle Walter who read the news and then editorialized about it on the same show starting the blurring of the lines between news and opinion.
We could go back to the Duranty's effusive praise of Uncle Joe's stewardship of the Soviet Union while denying the genocide by mass starvation of the Ukrainians, bombing of the Maine in Havana Harbor and maybe even back to the founding with John Callender. While Republicans generally get bad press, I'm not aware of press this relentlessly bad and partisan and this outrageously wrong. I suspect we've hit a new low. And since the press are not only not chastened by their "errors" but patting themselves on the back for their excellent reporting, the decent is not yet over. Taibbi says, "It’s very possible that the full report contains a great many details that “Mueller knew” and we didn’t, and which will be embarrassing to Trump."
That and the fact that there might be details that might be embarrassing to other people as well is a good reason to to release the FULL report but a redacted report (I seem to be in a minority on this). The idea is that the results of an investigation should be an indictment or the investigator should shut up. This is why Demonrats were justifiably outraged about Comey's July Fifth press conference where he detailed a lot of damaging information about Hillary but then said he wasn't going to recommend that she be indicted. The same goes for Mueller's equivocation about possible charges of obstruction of justice from Trump. Indict or shut up. The idea that there is still some piece of information that was uncovered during the investigation, embarrasses Trump, and has never been leaked to the media .... seems laughable on its face.
0% chance. "the truth will at long last catch up to Trump"
And what truth would that be? That he's not a racist? That he's not literally Hitler? That he isn't trying to screw the US to line his pockets?
He's done more to change things for the better than the last three Presidents combined, IMO. Unemployment is at record lows. He's working on trade deals, and trying to fix a lot of international diplomatic screwups that have been going on for decades like NK. And we're supposed to hate him with the fury of a thousand suns because he's not one of the 'Washington Political Elite'? Because Hillary lost? Because he's - horror of horrors - a 'businessman', and successful to boot? Someone who's used to doing things on a tight schedule, with the best possible results for the least cost? Because he's not as 'smooth' and facile a liar as our usual crop of political pimps? Yeah - I don't think so. The "march through the institutions" was supposed to leave something worth having for the marchers. That ship has sailed...

This has been going on for a very long time. Interesting--all the many anti-Trump stories that were on Facebook every day? Today they are ALL gone. It's like a different place without all the political propaganda.
