We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I do not remember Mr. Daniels when he was in politics, though over the past few years I've come to admire him, his straight talk and his policy recommendations. Wish we had more like him in politics, especially on the National level.
There is speculation here in Indiana as to why he did not pursue the Presidency, and ended up at Purdue after his second term as Governor. Whatever his motivations were in taking on Purdue's Presidency I'm glad to see he's running things the way he always has.
How can we help our young people? That has always been our goal in this family. The most terrifying and destructive force out there today is the student loan scam. And, given the poor quality of education these kids are getting it is correct to call it a "scam". But, to burden them with the kind of debt they are carrying is criminal. The most egregious effect it has is the possibility for bribing a student to commit "not quite legal" acts against third parties in order to make that debt "go away". Yep, now almost two generations of young people are available for hire by forces of evil.
The federal government has no business in loaning money for college. There is no doubt that it has harmed the colleges, i.e. encouraging them to lower their standards and create nonsense classes/programs just to get subsidized students and their money. Worse, the handwriting is on the wall that sooner or later some politician will "forgive" these loans in exchange for votes. That means the middle class taxpayer will pay for those classes in basket weaving and white male hating.
