We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
They are in isolated tribe with their own language and customs on a remote island. They probably have had some contact in the past with the outside world, or they wouldn't be so extremely hostile to outsiders. They want to be left alone. I say leave them alone.
If the desire to raise Africans, Central and South Americans to the standard of living of the West is to be applauded. Then how does the meme of protecting distinct cultures not become a contradiction?
If the left sees a right in these people groups to be left alone, then why is there such hostility to Bible clinging, gun toting southerners in their own country?
The whole "uncontacted tribe" thing is bizarre. Governments are basically preserving human beings like museum exhibits. Don't these people have a right to know that modern society exists? Do you think they really enjoy dying of diseases we can cure with antibiotics?
Do what Cromwell did. Give 'em some blankets to keep warm! Not enough diversity on that island. They are not strong because they are clinging to their old ways and they feel threatened by new things. They need some immigrants to come in and make them a stronger society on that island. They have no right to say no... etc.
I don't accept the explanation that they are hostile because of historically distant - over a century - attempts to contact them and the memory of this being handed down. This is very common behavior in many tribes on first approach. Human beings are like this, and our own history includes a lot of suspicion of outsiders. Learning that the outsiders have some valuable trade good lessens this somewhat, but only gradually.
Lawrence H Keeley's War Before Civilization is very good on this score.
