We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
What a terrific session. I almost NEVER watch videos but that was great. I don't watch TV but about once a week, I do watch his show. That and college football are my only TV viewing.
In the last few years, my wife and I have reduced our intake of political programming but the one show we make sure we watch is Tucker Carlson's. He has an engaging way of distilling events and ideas that is enjoyable and engaging. He's a lot more intellectual than he admits but it isn't the ivory-tower type intellectual but maybe closer to Will Rogers in that he is the intellectual for the common man. He is a humble intellectual.
He uses vivid, funny images to great effect. That extended riff on the Orange Viking who carries off all the livestock, and the Republican brahmins as the resentful, repressed Episcopalian Christmas dinner after a few martinis ("You never loved me!") is priceless.
I also love that his wife had an Ayn-Randish moment in which she realized it is not her duty as a good person to immolate herself and teach her kids to pour the gasoline and light the match. If someone hates you, yes, you might do well to consider how you've offended him, but you also might do well to consider whether he's a safe or valuable friend as opposed to someone you need to call the cops to you help you with. If he needs you to stop existing in order to make the world bearable, do you consent? Carlson points out that gay parents wouldn't pay exorbitant tuition to have professors tell their kids their parents were evil for being gay.
Tucker is an oasis in a vast wasteland. We dumped cable TV 11 years ago and don't miss it in the least, but we are informed and culturally hip, according to our Millennial kids. We always appreciate Tucker's clear-eyed view and we watch his videos on the web. This was a great speech.
