We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I had already forwarded this to many. It is sobering. As an evangelical Christian who has come up against a lot of people in cults and semichristian-cults and suspicious groupings, I thought his analogy of academia to those groups was intriguing. He was quite convincing on that score.
Assistant Village Idiot
I entered grad school in 1966 in engineering, and I had faculaty positions at a small elite college and a major research university for 37 years.
I did not once experience anything like he did, nor did I ever hear of such things happening to any of my colleagues or students. I did meet many arrogant, overbearing people and a few outright frauds and cheats. Admittedly, engineers are better people on average than people in the humanities, they have professional ethics for one thing, but the horror story recounted cannot be representative of academia as a whole.
The 60's were a long time ago, but I was still working at a university in 2007, and even at that date I did not see the rampant abuse he complains of.
Admittedly, I just got an email yesterday from the Provost that there is now a mandatory online course on sexual harassment that every faculty member, staff member and student must take and pass. Participation will be monitored. Punishments for noncompliance are not stated.
I won't be logging in, so my Professor Emeritus status might be cancelled as well as my parking, email and library privileges. Actually don't care about that. Will update you as needed.
I refuse to pay one dime to access WaPo, which slugs "Democracy Dies in Darkness" in its banner, but is a tool of the CIA and the Cabal of Propaganda along with the NYT, AP, Rueters and many others. Our constitutional republic is dying thanks to their effort to op/ed everything they print. The electronic media is no better.
Thank God for the Internet which, to date, still allows posting and dialogue through blogs such as MF.
