We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The idea behind giving professors lifetime tenure is that this will enable them to speak out freely. But it would be hard to name any other occupation with a more cowardly record than academics, who have been giving in to politically correct campus bullies ever since the 1960s.
I (we) used to agree with the idea that tenure was unnecessary. We so supported that idea that when my DH was offered the oportunity to build two new Master's programs. He took the job. The conditions of employment were one year renewable contracts with "no tenure for anyone". Build the program--increase income and job security. Welll--he built the program and was rewarded with two year renewable contracts as a way of recognizing his job excellence.HOWEVER, the formula for his salary was not the same as the formula used by one of the women who owned a piece of the school real estate (very wealth family--no degree). When my DH presented a proposal for a new doctorate program to the chancellor, the chancellor stole the material and put his wife (not qualified) in charge of the new doctorate program. When the faculty rebelled at that he then put himself in charge--the reason being that the chancellor had been forced into retirement due to unethical behavior! Yes, but they had to give him some retirement income so the school gave him my husband's ph.d program to run online from his new home in the Pacific Northwest! When the new president (lesbian) announced my DH's resignation in a public forum--she had never discussed it with him first. We were told she did that because it's a new boss strategy called "shock and awe--get over it and make her look good if you want to have a career". We chose to leave and he has never again had any permanent position in academia. Academia is too corrupt for there to be "no protection". Sorry--been there--done that! Did I tell you about the seven years my husband did not take vacation leave so he could save it up for his last year before retirement? Yeah-- that was real smart. Come budget time when the new president wanted to make the books look good she just wiped those seven years off the ledger--never gave him the opportunity to use them, didn't even tell him what was going to happen. Yeah--boy -- she's as tough as her daddy ain't we all so proud !
The few professors who have made a stand were stabbed in the back by other academics and their administrations. Unless you teach at a place like Hillsdale or Grove City, you'll get zero support for speaking honestly.
It puzzles me that I've not heard of a school that chose to expel its unruly and disruptive students. Surely they have violated a conduct rule or policy? As for the tenured faculty kowtowing to these students, I suppose it is because they are unwilling to confront them and find it easier to stop the screaming, especially given that the school administration is unwilling to discipline these students.
