We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
For students who shout down speakers or otherwise prevent them from talking, the new legislation is “problematic because it could have really devastating effects,” Owens warns, noting that students could be suspended or expelled for such behavior.
I bet that DOES trouble you. How will you muzzle people who question your shenanigans if your people are held accountable?
"For students who shout down speakers or otherwise prevent them from talking, the new legislation is “problematic because it could have really devastating effects,” Owens warns, noting that students could be suspended or expelled for such behavior."
Defining this consequence as 'problematic' tries to make a non-problem into a problem. The consequence of being expelled is in the behavior code of virtually every institution.
But using the whole idea of silencing a speaker by indirect force is a crude attempt at re-defining their ideas as controversial or harmful - and this has almost never been the case in the stories we have been reading over the past few years about campus radicals shutting down established / respected research findings or political / social ideas. Such behavior is just a craven attempt to move these things out of the defined mainstream, where they originated and place them into forbidden territory.
Got a problem with it? Running out of peaceful discussion ideas? How do you feel about getting punched in the face, then? Just because people have avoided confrontation up till now is no reason to expect their patience and tolerance for your childish tantrums is bottomless. It's going to be a very interesting election season I think.
More and more people might decide they actually are right-wing if this keeps up.
I suspect many are a rather soft righ-wing who don't know it. They have been consistently misled that the right-wing hates black people, and women, and doesn't care if children go hungry or can't get medicine - and they know they are nice people who don't want that.
If the mass media had become neutral at any point from about 1965 on, the Democratic Party as we know it would have elected so few people beginning ten years later that it would be a non-factor. Or, it would have changed in order to attract votes.
