We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"Unprepared" is a euphemism with the hidden assumption that everybody, if "prepared," would be higher ed material. Of course, there are countless reasons why the assumption is wrong, but let's start with some of the obvious ones: half of the population has below-average IQ; many people lack the interest or the character traits needed for rigorous high ed (or for high school for that matter, but may want the diploma); many kids float through secondary school while benefiting minimally.
The government provides money to students to hand over to colleges.
If the government provided "banquet loans" so that young people were loaned thousands of dollars at low rates to be used at expensive restaurants, what do you think would happen to the restaurant industry. And what would those restaurants say when the taxpayers tried to cut back on that as useless?

Because college is the new big business. And Big College is generating big income. If you say "we won't take you because you aren't ready, that smacks of racism to race hustlers (cough Al Sharpton, cough Jesse Jackson) and they will say that it is elitism if not racism. So increase your profits, hire more administrators and take more students. Everybody wins, right?
Not the taxpayers who are subsidizing millions of useless degrees. Not the students who graduate without rudimentary critical thinking skills.
Today's white children have been dumbed down intentionally. This was done by the liberal elites who wanted to "level the playing field" and could not think of a better way. Could not figure out how to get the black community to support their own children's education. Could not think of a way to help the black community embrace education--therefore, take away education from the white community. The dumbing down of American schools has been intentionally racist from the beginning somewhere in the late 1960's to early 1970's when it really started. My dd was "taught to the test" in 11th grade--that in a private mostly white high school run by the Episcopalians! The year was 1983. Teach to the test means the teacher goes over the questions that will be on the test and then gives the answers days in advance so that they can be memorized. This was done in history and english as well as math. "Teaching to the test" was immoral and unethical then and should have been outlawed, but was not. It became the only pedagogy used in grades 1-12. Thus, and therefore, our children cannot make connections when reading. Do not understand the basic function of algebra. You folks let it pass on when your children were "barely getting through", should have stood up then. OH, I remember some of you did try at PTA meetings, but then got pushed off into meaningless committees. What did you do then?
