The argument that introducing modern civilization to more primitive societies may have been more of a blessing than a curse in many cases seems to be One Of Those Things You Can Not Say.

What would India be without the British Raj? Well, hard to say, but debatable.

Couldn't we say the same about any conquering nations going back centuries? What about the Moors influence in Spain? With architecture, language, etc.? What about any number of horrible battles that had a lot of violence and death, but allowed new cultures to be absorbed and ideas exchanged?

There is violence in the world. That is how it has always been. It is inherent in a sinful world. We cannot escape it. And to go back in time and judge people by today's standards for how they treated another culture or country...? That's ridiculous.

What would India be without the British Raj? Well, hard to say, but debatable.

There are many languages spoken in India. English is accepted as a lingua franca for the country, because its acceptance doesn't discriminate against any language group. Hindi would not be acceptable in the south of India, where Hindi is referred to as the "Conquerer's Tongue" - or so a visitor to India one told me.

From what I have read, the Muslim conquest of India killed magnitudes more than the British ever did.

LOL Geography and bullshit...

I have made a similar argument about India. They were incredibly lucky when the British "colonized" them. Certainly people were mistreated by the British and there were conflicts where people were killed. But based on their own history far fewer people were mistreated or killed exactly because the British were there. Left to their historical norms India would have been a terrible hell hole for common people during those same year that the British brought them education and a path to the 20th century.

IMHO the real harm was done by America in the 50's and 60's bringing India health care, antibiotics and vaccinations. Simply because it resulted in a quadrupling of their population well beyond their ability to provide even decent water and toilets.

Honestly India would have been far better off if they had not thrown out the British. Gandhi was at best a well intentioned curse on that country. Come to think of it most liberals/left wing activists are "well intended curses".

My guess is that without the Raj, India would now be a thriving region of the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere. But the locals wouldn't like it. Especially that learning Japanese part.
