The overwhelming majority of Americans don’t know that September 17 was the celebration of the 230th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.

Neither did I until I read this.

To say our constitutional system is undergoing a crisis is an understatement. The states have been crushed by the federal government, and the national legislature — the predominant branch of the federal government — has allowed itself to be neutered by the executive and judicial branches, abdicating its responsibility to protect the people and the states from such usurpations.

For some reason, until this year, I thought it was the 16th.

16th, 17th, and to a lesser extent 23rd Amendments completely ended true federalism in the US. 16th removed the limits on the taxing power, leading to the possibility of the dramatic growth of the Federal (really National) government we've seen since. The 17th, allowing the direct election of senators, removed the voice of state governments in creating legislation and limiting the powers of the central government. The 23rd, granting the District of Columbia Electoral votes, practically redefined states as subsidiary jurisdictions of the federal government, not as co-sovereign entities of their own (the non-representation issue could have been better solved by granting the population and subsequent electoral college representation to either Maryland or Virginia)
