In college, for 3 weeks, I worked as a hawker during football games. First week, they gave me the beer. I did great. Almost $60 an hour for 3 hours work. Thing is, the best hawkers did even better - close to $100 an hour. These guys were pros, I was a student.
The following 2 weeks, because of my 'underperformance' I was put on popcorn. I quit after the 3rd week. No money in popcorn, even if you hustle.

The trick with beer, I learned too late, was to buy 3 racks (hawkers have to buy their beer), set up next to the seat entrances, and sell them as people move in and out. I was a classic 'roam the stands' guy. The pros, though, set up mini-shops, sold out fast, went back and bought 3 more racks.

I remember the cost of a rack, which held 25 beers, was $20 and the customer price (which you could negotiate if you were smart) was $50 for all 25, or $2. So you made slightly more than $1 every time you sold a beer. It was a great gig, if you got it.

Popcorn, by comparison, had less of a markup and didn't sell as well.
