We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Maybe it's time to take a hard look at German practice, where students get streamed about Grade 10 and those not considered university material are diverted to various training courses. As far as I can figure it, it's the rare job there which doesn't have training attached - and not just job-shadowing or "on the job" training either. There are formal courses for almost everything (heard of one for travel agent).
normally I'd say its a free country and if someone meaning some family wants to spend $100k or so of post-tax, pre-interest money on Junior's degree in some field of study that has both zero present and zero future value, then have at it.
except a lot of that money is federally guaranteed loans, meaning when the baristas default on their payments, the half of us who pay taxes pick up his tab. it also means there's no brake on tuition increases and every incentive to let the most unqualified enroll.
when everyone has a college degree then .... well what's the value of the ubiquitous high school /GED diploma that even University of Alabama football players have?
