We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Have you noticed?


Have you noticed how many people are working part-time these days? I mean people who want to work full-time, but can not find full-time jobs.


Also, how many people are working without benefits, for whatever reason?


What, if anything, does this have to do with Obamacare?

I can help with this one. The cost of providing a new full-time hire with benefits is getting higher. Obamacare is only one factor, but since the regulations are tougher and costs higher, why expose your organization to MORE of these costs and regulations? I haven't read all 2000+ pages of the ACA. But I do know that it defines full time work as more than 29 hours per week and that there are stiff penalties if my college uses part time teachers for more than those 29 hours. So part of my job as an administrator is to make sure that our part time teachers don't go over 29 hours. The short version of this story is that our part time teachers can't teach as many classes and thus make less money than they did before Obamacare.

I live in Vermont. Property taxes are income sensitized. I know people who cut back hours to come in under the threshold. I might do the math myself one of these days.

Let's see: a part time job and a sub job for the rest of the days... and half my income goes to pay for health insur. We have to get an exchange plan or go without insur because no other bills are getting paid at this point.

That would be the U-6 - the real unemployment number. This administration uses the U-3 as the "official" number. Big difference.

I can help with this one. Companies now have software to keep track of exactly how many hours "independent contractors," i.e., part-timers, work. They are all kept under the threshold where they will trigger Obamacare and other mandates, or be deemed an "employee" for Labor Department purposes. And the part-timers are basically are all on-call and they get called in so long as they don't go over the thresholds. In the big box store company where one of my sons worked in California, basically all the employees were laid off in waves after Obamacare took effect, and then the company hired back the employees they liked as part-timers.

Bottom line, isn't this what the election is all about? Who is going to prioritize growth, robust enough to reach the Middle?
