We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It was Sowell's Conflict of Visions, a sort of prequel to this book, that largely shaped my own view of politics and government and the way the world works. Everybody's just trying their best to get along and if you want to change the world you're going to have to convince people you have a better way of doing things. A normal person tries to persuade others to his point of view, it takes a special kind of egomaniac so convinced he's right to think himself entitled to force other people against their will to adopt his vision. That sort of person is especially attracted to government and is the very last person you want anywhere near the levers of power.
