We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
We can no more reverse the Great Migration than unsee a painting by Jacob Lawrence, unhear Prince or Coltrane, erase The Piano Lesson, remove Mae Jemison from her spacesuit in science textbooks, delete Beloved.
The New York Times noticed in the early 1970s that, for the first time, more blacks were moving from the North to the South than vice versa. Last year, the Times described the South's share of black population growth as "about half the country's total in the 1970s, two-thirds in the 1990s and three-quarters in the decade that just ended."
Agreed. Another reason for blacks moving back South is that with Jim Crow gone, the South is much more hospitable for blacks than it once was. The parents of a childhood friend took The Great Migration route to the North, where they met. The parents had no fondness for the South. Yet my friend, when an adult, remarked that Houston was a good place to live- information courtesy of a former in-law who had moved there.
The point of the Smithsonian article for me is that while it may have once been true that the South was much more racist than the North, that description is is no longer valid. Else why would blacks be moving back South? Are they masochists? Methinks not.
