We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"if you want your doctor you can keep your doctor."
My doctor quit the practice of medicine last year. He sent a blistering letter to all his patients saying he was quitting because Obamacare and all the additional regulations, especially the new required coding, made it impossible to make a living. He said Obamacare had destroyed the country's healthcare system. We are now down something like 900 doctors in our state in terms of what's needed versus who are still practicing.
If the powers that be focused on reducing the cost of college, which would basically entail getting rid of the administrative bloat that has been added to higher education in the last 40 years, they would be credible.
If making college "free" just means zero tuition to be paid, then folks are going to be shocked when they find out about Student Activity Fees, Lab Fees, Health Fees, living expenses, books, travel expenses, and so forth.
When I went to Univ of Texas back in the '70s, my tuition was only $5 a semester hour, IIRC. Fees and books brought it to a couple of hundred bucks a semester. I imagine that the tuition-to-fees ratio remains at least that bad.
"Free" like in Europe would mean you have to take a test and probably fewer than 50 percent of our current college students would make the cut.
It's free here in Germany. At least to those smart enough to pass the entrance exam required to get in.
Because any American 'snowflake' can get into college by putting their name on an application, the only thing they get when they graduate is a worthless piece of paper and massive student debt with no possibility of a job other than a Wal-mart check-out clerk.
