We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
But they eagerly take the money the federal government pays each of them and they eagerly accept zero income taxes (or any taxes).
The reservation system might have made sense in the 1900's but it makes no sense today. Convert the Indian assets to a corporation and give each member of the tribe an equal share of that corporation. Give each individual living on the reservation (or eligible to) a deed to their own land and hold the rest of the land as a corporate asset that they can all own. Bring them into the 21st century. They are Americans allow them to be free and productive Americans and not wards of the state.
By the way many tribes and individuals in those tribes do quite well and are indeed in the 21st century. It varies a great deal from tribe to tribe and within the tribes. Some of the tribes are quite wealthy and others live on welfare.
