Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Thursday, December 3. 2015Choose Your Own Gun Statistics
There's no law that can keep us safe. After all, there are laws against bombs. Still, the Bath School Massacre, Oklahoma City, Boston Marathon and a host of others, are all examples of how mass death can take place without guns. When deranged people have a goal, they will usually achieve that goal regardless of the laws in place. Misguided folk, who believe laws can keep us safe, feel there are ways to keep guns out of the hands of 'deranged' people. Unfortunately, the definition of 'deranged' is likely to be open to political maneuvering. I know, because of my deep distrust and dislike of government, that I could easily land up on a politicized list of 'deranged' people. I don't want to invoke Godwin's Law, but it suits this discussion...the Nazis classified political opponents as 'mentally unstable'. Is it so hard to conceive of a future where people like climate skeptics (who are already hearing calls for their views to be criminalized) would be classified as 'mentally unstable' and have their guns taken? Even more misguided is the belief that banning guns will make us safe. Because strict gun laws always make us perfectly safe. Like in Chicago. Or California. Or France. To make a case compelling, you have to make it seem like science, so you'll call up data and misuse it. Which is what WaPo did on this blog. Alternatively, you can pick and choose your data to suit your meme. It doesn't have to be scientific. It just has to look scientific. Trackbacks

"the Nazis classified political opponents as 'mentally unstable'.
The same thing was done in the Soviet Union. Dissidents were sent to mental hospitals. Yeah. The USSR had volumes of imaginary crimes ("Praising American Democracy) for which subjects could be punished.
Why use Nazis. Use the USSR: they are the socialists admired by and imitated by our ruling elite. Misguided folk, who believe laws can keep us safe, feel there are ways to keep guns out of the hands of 'deranged' people.
Imagine adding a question to an application for owning a gun: "Do you plan to use this gun for mass murder or for terrorism?"How likely are those who are planning just that will give an honest answer? Even more misguided is the belief that banning guns will make us safe. Because strict gun laws always make us perfectly safe. Like in Chicago. Or California. Or France. I did a correlation exercise of murder rate versus gun ownership for 170 odd countries. Slightly negative correlation, which does not support banning guns in the US. After all, the US has about the highest rate of gun ownership in the world, but ranks about in the middle for murder rate. Advice is needed for home defense shotgun. Mossberg 500? Flyweight owner so it cannot have. Huge amount of kick.
I'm not sure what you'd call a "huge amount of kick." But, why worry about it if your aim is to disable or kill the intruder. Buy a 12 gauge for sure. One well placed pattern of 00 buckshot will do the trick, maybe two if you're not a very good shooter. Make damn sure you are trained and know how to use the weapon safely.
"Make damn sure you are trained and know how to use the weapon safely" Excellent advice. There is no substitute for practice and if you think you have had enough practice, practice some more. In the event you do have to defend yourself the adrenaline will be pumping through you and you want to make sure you put a hole in the bad guy and not your ceiling or floor.
You want a pump action, easy to use and be ready for a second shot. I would fire standard 2 3/4" 7 1/2 shot ammo available everywhere. It won't go through as many walls as larger shot would. If you hit someone it will make them change their mind if it doesn't kill them. The recoil isn't bad but a 12 gauge has a kick. Avoid the Mag or super-mag shells. Learn how to shoot it and learn how far it is effective and how much the pellets will disperse. Aim for center of mass, that's about 6" above the belly button. If you have to go get your gun pump that action loud and proud. Just that sound alone will make any sane person leave your home. Do not chase anyone outside your home and do not shoot at anyone walking/running away from you. IMHO I would recommend a large dog. Sure get the shotgun if you want it but the dog will probably prevent the necessity of using the gun.
MissyW:
20 gauge may work for you but the standard of excellence is a 12 gauge. Get some low recoil ammunition. Try it before you buy it if you can. A Mossberg 500 is a good choice, so is a Remington 570 (my personal favorite); there are many variations. Get some expert advice and instruction. You must practice. You must practice. You must practice. You must practice. "Still, the Bath School Massacre, Oklahoma City, Boston Marathon and a host of others, are all examples of how mass death can take place without guns."
Not forgetting the biggest one of all: turning passenger jets into cruise missiles on 9/11. No guns or bombs involved at all! No correlation between gun laws and homicide rate. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2015/10/06/zero-correlation-between-state-homicide-rate-and-state-gun-laws/
Gun-control advocates often focus on gun deaths rather than overall homicide rates when comparing states or countries. Which is either silly or dishonest. American statistics are inflated about 100% by black-on-black homicides - which do not occur in Europe, Japan, Australia, etc. What causes that is a whole new discussion, but for openers, the usual suspects of poverty and unemployment don't hold up. There is an additional increase that we see among all groups worldwide when they live near groups that they perceive as Other. That seems to affect every race and tribe. We have lots of different folks in America - it's who we are, I suppose - and we actually have less of that group overstimulation than other parts of the world. Think Yugoslavia. Think Jews. Think Gypsies. And that's just peaceful, condescending Europe. Which is going to see a rise again, whatever their gun laws are. Take out those two factors - the effect of proximity and the 8x violent crime rate of African-Americans - and our homicide rates are the same as Europe's and better than most everywhere else. It's ancestors and maybe culture, not legislation. Sad truth. I'm thinking that arming responsible middle-aged black people might be the smartest thing we can do overall. "Unfortunately, the definition of 'deranged' is likely to be open to political maneuvering."
You bet. Look at what the Democrats are already doing with their latest gun control proposal. Obama and Hillary are going around saying people on the No Fly List should not be allowed to have guns. The bill actually says people on the Terror Watch List can't have guns. The difference? No Fly List has about 20k on it. Terror Watch List has 800k, and can still fly, prob don't know they're on it. If they succeed with the bill, I'd expect The List to grow exponentially with addition of Tea Partiers, Climate Skeptics, Patriots and anyone else who "pops off". |
