Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Please tell me this is sarcasm. It certainly isn't English.
OH BOY OBERLIN TOO !
Sorry BD. I know you have (had?) a child at Oberlin. Did you REALLY think it was rigorous, or did you just pretend in order to feel good about at least getting the kid into some school? Sorry, about this--but, I have been trying to warn you for years! If only there was hope that they'd be smarter when they got out...
Colleges came from a European tradition. Why are these SJWs Culturally Appropriating Hamilton College!?!
I apologize for the 60's; now I know how my parents felt.
Meant to say this reminds me of the college sit ins in the 60's.
Hamilton College will have little choice but to cave in to these little neo-nazi bastards. Hamilton is a small, crappy liberal arts school with no pedigree to offer in exchange for the insane amount of tuition it charges. Only morons and suckers go to Hamilton. It's like Bard College, but stuck in the frozen tundra of Minnesota and without Steely Dan or Chevy Chase as alumni. Has anyone outside Minnesota even heard of this shithole?
As a conservative, I am watching these college uprisings with unreserved glee. The administrators of these colleges all surfed in the wake of the Gramsci's long march through the institutions, sponsoring Marxists on their faculty and lying to alumni to obtain financial support. Socialist revolutions eat their own, and now these admins are on the menu--a most excellent outcome. Shitholes like Hamilton can't die fast enough. Good riddance. Hamilton College is in Clinton, New York.
As with any institution, there are good and bad actors present. Yes, the administration may very well cave. They have run most of the conservative voice off campus. However, I am pleased to say my son is a graduate and was part of a very vocal, conservative group of students during his time on campus. The education he obtained was first rate. I am also pleased to count as close friends, graduates of Hamilton. Fine members of my community and folks who would fit right in with the crowd here at Maggie's Farm. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion - I urge you to be mindful that the few do not speak for the many. Thank God the government is expanding. Who else would hire
these use less uneducated idiots. Our company quite hiring graduates of most colleges years ago. There are a few select colleges that we consider. Otherwise, we found that it was not worth the hassle to hire idiots with an inflated sense of self-worth. We found found that hiring reasonably intelligent and motivated high school graduates who had the brains, but not the finances, to attend college - and who had been out in the real world for a year or two - proved to be a better investment.
Rather than wasting our time trying to de-program attitudes such as displayed by students at Missouri and Hamilton, we search for young adults with the maturity and humility to recognize that the only reason for hiring them is that we expect them to produce for us more than they cost us. Those that recognize this usually have the motivation to do well in our on the job training and end up better qualified and more productive than their college counterparts who think that they deserve a paycheck simply for being hired. Unfortunately, today's typical college graduate THINKS he knows everything, but actually knows almost nothing. Hence, it is virtually impossible to teach him anything. He is used to being coddled and to receiving "A"s for what were once called crip courses. He is unaccustomed and unprepared to face and deal with the unavoidable hardships and failures of work and life. As such, he retreats from challenges and hard work of the real world and comforts himself with the alibi that he's a graduate of the University of Kumbaya. We only interview STEM students. Liberal Arts majors need not apply.
Yes, but let's not forget Antioch University. Forced to close down in approximately 23 states for fraud. They split the university after being closed for a year. Then they come back as two institutions: a university with no undergraduate school and college with free tuition to anyone stupid enough to attend. BUT NOT TO WORRY One of the republicans campaigning for president--Ohio governor John Kasich--gave them permission to re-open their doors and approved their certification for both institutions to practice in OH. OH is the home of Antioch college and the governor gave them the approval they needed to continue defraud so many innocent people. Katich, is a disgusting coward and no better than any whipped ass white male cow!
But, not to worry--some of the people involved with Antioch are now the primary movers in the Common Core program and stand to gain the most financially from "new ways to educate". Post-HS education has truly become folly and farcical, at so many levels. Especially when done via online coursework.
College is now like prison.
It conditions and trains it's prisoners to accept an alternate reality of dependence and contains nothing in comparison with reality. Even the Z-Team has its limits, as there is no Z-Team defense of the Hamilton students.
My favourite word was cisnormativity!
I'm actually a big fan of much more of this sort of terminology, i.e., cisgender, cisphobia, transphobia, heteronormativity etc., etc. Why? Because it's impenetrable blather and no one with a real life and real worries is going waste a moment trying to decipher it. The "progressives" behind such terminological nonsense merely end up neatly trapped in their own self-contained bubble. I went to college at MIT. My Junior year I took a class to fulfill my Humanities requirement (at MIT, humanities = "no equations in the textbook") called "Fantasy and Science Fiction". Requirements - everyone reads a given fantasy or science fiction book one week, writes up a couple of pages on it and discusses it the first meeting of next week. Rinse and repeat for the rest of the semester.
Beginning of 2nd week, in walks the professor. "I have your essays here," she said - and heaved them all across the room. "You are all at the finest university in the world and none of you can write worth a damn. You think that the longer you make your sentences and the bigger the words you use the smarter you are. I'm turning the next six weeks of this class into a writing course. By the end of the semester you will all learn how to write a simple declarative sentence." One of the most useful courses I took at MIT. One of the most useful courses I took at MIT.
One reason I majored in STEM was that I hated writing papers, and assumed that STEM would be a good way to avoid having to write papers. Then came Senior Lab, where a team of 4 had to write a 20-30 page lab report every week. I learned that good writing is a requirement for all professions. A childhood friend on a temp job observed that the company memorandums were uniformly badly written. She proposed a writing course for new hires. With this proposal she became a "permanent" employee, and rode up the corporate ladders as she increased her skill set. My son is applying to Hamilton right now. beautiful campus. I guess there are idiots everywhere.
What kind of education are these 'students' receiving if they can't even think?
