Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Monday, November 23. 2015Feel the Balm of the Oil of Palm
Well, another Monday has rolled around. Time to leave the old rack and earn the spondulac. Exit your cribs to get the dibs. Act the noble savage to get the happy cabbage. Brave the debris to get the dough-re-mi. Feel the balm of the oil of palm. I hope by close of business that you pile the oof up to the roof. Alarming News: Just a bunch of links to writing done elsewhere Well, you see what I mean. I can assure you that the percentage of live blogs to festering pixel corpses doesn't improve as you continue down the blogroll. I guess it's true what Sir Walter Scott said about blogging:
I'm not picking on Ace, of course. He doesn't have time to read his blog. If he's like most bloggers, he leaves his blogroll as it was eight years ago, as a kind of shrine to his friends, many of whom are his commenters, I'm sure.
Obama is barely smart enough to order the most expensive thing on the menu at a Sizzler, and the press corps thinks he's a polymath. Bosch's Giant Robot Can Punch Weeds to Death
If this works better than the current eco-friendly method, which is having illegal aliens crapping on the weeds, then Chipotle and I are all for it. How to Baffle Web Trackers by Obfuscating Your Movements Online

After reading the article, I realize I have no idea how anything works anymore, but neither does anyone else, so I don't feel bad. Why has Italian cinema lost its appeal abroad?
Why has Italian cinema lost its appeal? Sophia Loren's bustline finally dipped below the horizon. It's really that simple. And stop calling her abroad. What I’ve learned from sitting next to a pro salesman
The author talks in wonderment when the salesman asks about the health of a customer's family members before trying to sell them things. The concept of using good manners, or any manners at all, doesn't even register as "a thing" with the author. Honestly, iPhones have utterly destroyed an entire generation of human beings. Coming soon: chicken meat without slaughter
I've raised chickens. Chicken breast grown in a petri dish will be 10 percent smarter than any chicken I've ever met. OK, everybody, time to get after that spondulac!

Top 10 Ways Wood Pellets Beat Firewood
Ash isn't a bad thing. It's a soil amender. If you are reliant on buying wood pellets you are reliant on the stores having them to buy. What happens when they are out of stock. What happens when the trucks aren't delivering? Wood isn't taxed multiple times like wood pellets probably are (like coal). The process of acquiring your own wood (cutting, splitting, stacking) is also a heat producer. Trees need to be harvested just like any other living thing. Cutting for fuel is a way to remove the old, dead and makes room for new seedlings to grow. That's why our state forest has trees marked to cut for a small permit price (i was suprised how low that permit price is). "Wood pellets don't contain insects." I don't see a problem here. Don't stack it near your house and don't stack it in your house. Saving money might mean a little more physical work. Are wood pellets being marketed as better for the environment? Yeah, just like burning corn in our fuel tanks, right? It's a net energy loss because those wood pellets are processed before they even get to you (using energy resources). It's not the only outlet for sawdust. Farmers use sawdust for bedding. And it's not cheap. (and it's sales taxed so I'm thinking wood pellets are also). and you have to dispose of those plastic bags. Don't let DEP find out you are burning those bags and creating volatile plastic emissions. Wood pellets v. firewood
Just found this hilarious article reporting on the latest "study." http://www.adn.com/article/20151122/cleaner-atmosphere-means-more-arctic-sea-ice-melt-study-says "I've raised chickens. Chicken breast grown in a petri dish will be 10 percent smarter than any chicken I've ever met."
I'm sure it won't taste as good but at least the eaters will have moral superiority. The other morning I had to call my husband because one of our Angus got her head stuck in the barn wall - between two slats of wood (i have no idea why she would stick her head out this tiny hole) and for the life of me I could not get her to back herself out because she kept trying to move forwards. When we finally got her out by using a fulcrum to push her body backwards while I turned her big head, i said "and this is why we EAT THEM and not the other way around." The trick is to tuck the ears back out the hole, they'll back right out.
Unless they're bat shit crazy that you can't get close enough to tuck the ears. Then they should be in the freezer quicker! She not only doesn't have reverse. SHE DID IT AGAIN LAST NITE.
I didn't think she was stupid enough to do that. I was wrong. Having also raised cattle, Angus among them, I feel your pain!
Re Hats, boaters actually:
The butler is speaking about (long gone) London. In the Spring, you can still find men wearing straw boaters around the Swan Boats in Boston. FYI: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/theanchoress/". Still going strong.
re Blogging is dead
Indeed, I have hit on the links various bloggers provide and have had similar results. I understand why it happens. Blogs are unforgiving task masters. If you don't provide new content every day your audience goes away. Burnout must be a real problem for the sole proprietor blogs particularly. I stand in awe of a man like Richard Fernandez who can come out with a quality column almost every day and has done so for a dozen years. I also marvel at the Maggie's farmers who have done this for years because they want to. Many thanks. It's fun to visit here. For those looking for The Anchoress, Elizabeth Scalia edits at Patheos and writes a blog called the Font.

I found House of Eratosthenes because of M'sF. Re: The Global "Vietnam"
That Obummer misunderstood that not doing anything could be doing "stupid sh*t", is not surprising since he's misunderstood everything else. He and his supporters continue to believe the Islamist violence is political in nature, a position that is ridiculous on its face. Besides the fact of centuries of Islamic aggression beginning shortly after Mohammed's death through the current day, there is the obvious question, "what political motivation does ISIS have in murdering Christians an other 'infidels'?". Indeed, the same question could be applied to any of the Islamist groups that have sprung up like weeds in the last several years. He, and his minions, also do not understand the dynamics of power vacuum - the chaos in Libya and the rise of ISIS in Syria and Iraq are prime examples. There are two ways to successfully end a war after conquering the enemy - taking over his country or occupying it and replacing the old power with a new. The former is the "old" way of doing it but the latter is the new "Western" way, as in WWII and Korea - both very successful, if overly protracted, involvements. If Obummer's strategy is to encourage greater involvement from other countries in "policing" the world, there would be at least be some value in it, but that doesn't appear to be the case. It seems pretty clear that his strategy is to withdraw US influence from the world and let the chips fall where they may. Obummer can't be blamed for all the problems in the world, but he can't be credited for any solutions or improvements either. > I say the old ways are the best ways, so I'm going to stick with burning peat in a brazier in the middle of my great hall, thanks.
Dude, the whole brazier-burning thing has been over since the 70s. And yeah, vanderleun over at American Digest is very much alive. His site is a national treasure. What killed Italian cinema?
Madonna's remake of Lina Wertmuller's "Swept Away" put the nail in the coffin in my book. "Living in a cave is the alternative, huh? You could, you know, shut the goddamned thing off."
If you truly believe that staying offline is the solution to overwhelming commercial online surveillance, you have the understanding of a child. The Wall Street Journal had an excellent series about this issue last year - you might want to educate yourself on the topic a bit before doing your grumpy old man act. |
