We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Affirmative action has poisoned the system. Herewith a simple remedy, one that has no chance of being implemented:
The average composite SAT core for Harvard freshman is about 2237 (as of 2013). Any black or hispanic student who achieves that score will be automatically admitted, no questions asked.
Harvard admits approximately 2,000 students each year for 1,665 class spots. Surely there aren't enough spots for qualified minorities?
Think again. A study done in 2000 shows that from a total population of 119,591 black SAT test takers, only 914 scored at least 700 in the verbal section, and only 746 got over 700 in math. That works out to 0.8% and 0.6% respectively. The corresponding percentages for white (non-asian) students were 5.3% and 5.8%.
So, best case using year 2000 numbers, the number of black students who achieved a composite SAT score of 2100 in the entire U.S.A. is approximately 1,660 -- that's one Harvard class.
(Minor quibbles: I know that year 2000 data is outdated, the SAT has changed, we're comparing a composite mean of 2100 the current 2237, we'd have to adjust the 2237 Harvard mean to reflect white only, etc., etc., but the main point holds.)
I for one would be thrilled if the entire incoming Harvard class were comprised by black students. They would be like the Tuskegee Airmen, a beacon for achievement.
Don't hold black students to lower standards; give them a chance to perform.

I beleive affirmative action is the cause of the black racism we see today. As Thomas Sowell explains, it hurts the average black while helping the accomplished black. An employer is disincentivized in taking a chance on a marginally qualified black or a black whose qualifications are ambiguous in favor of "safe" blacks or even marginally qualified workers of other races.
If that person should not workout as an employee, he will be very difficult to fire as the EEOC, rhymning reverends, etc. will cause him endless trouble. If the marginally qualified employee was white, he could be tossed out on the street without consequence. Highly skilled blacks and everyone else will have a much better time of it.
Then end result is that there are less opportunities for the average black which contributes to the meme that the society is racist.
The problem is not white racism towards blacks and hispanics. Anyone who is older than 60 or so has seen a virtual revolution North and if there were two white people in sight at least one of them and maybe both of them would be racist. Today you would struggle to find a white racist anywhere in the U.S. including the old South. While at the same time during the last 50 years blacks (and to a lesser extent other races) have become retrained to be racist towards whites. It took decades and activists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and many more like them to make it so. This was intentional and it may well take 50 years of concerted effort by all Americans to reverse it. However I see no desire to reverse it and no indication that our leaders even have a clue as to how to reverse it.
Oops! Somehow a line was erased when I submitted that post. The statement "Anyone who is older than 60 or so has seen a virtual revolution North and if there were two white people in sight at least one of them and maybe both of them would be racist."
Should have been: "Anyone who is older than 60 or so has seen a virtual revolution in this country where white racism towards blacks was virtually eliminated. It used to be true that in the old South if you met two people one or both were probably racist and it was not much better in the North"
