We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I had a grand total of $3000 to spend on the rehearsal dinner, wedding and honeymoon. I made it, but it took some doing. I catered my own reception (appetizers, cakes and beverages only) and baked the wedding cake(s). It helped that we got married at Christmas, so my church was already beautifully decorated and needed no embellishments. It was a Homeric effort, but I would not have done it differently for the world. My old Boy Scout Troop even turned out to clean up the Parish Hall, and you cannot put a price tag on that.
I can't believe what people spend on weddings - or proms for that matter. A friend of mine's daughter was getting married so my friend offered them a down payment on a house or a big wedding. A lovely girl and nice young man but sometimes I wonder about them. They chose the wedding!!
My mother sprang for the "rehearsal" dinner (my wedding was not at all complicated enough for a rehearsal), but I paid for the wedding and reception. We had a nice justice of the peace ceremony and a great reception at a restaurant that started as Louisiana plantation. Later it became a bawdy house and the portraits of the girls who worked there were hung in different dining rooms. It was back in '82 and only cost about $2k. EVERYBODY had a GREAT time! People still talk about how much fun they had!
