We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
A friend of mine is a very liberal history professor at a small liberal arts college. Some of this person's posts on Facebook make me cringe...including a recent classroom discussion this professor had with the class about 'privilege.' The worst part was my friend accused one person in the class of not understanding or admitting that he was the one with the most 'privilege' out of everyone in the room.
My guess is, this student was a white male.
I was horrified. I imagined my teenage son (white male) being told that he was privileged and should feel bad for an accident of birth. A college professor has NO idea where any of his students came from, what obstacles they had in life, what their financial situation was, what tragedies they may have experienced or difficulties in school. What a joke that this is being 'taught' in a history class.
Obviously, my friend has fallen for this crap hook, line and sinker. This is not about teaching anything at all; it is about identity politics and learning to be a victim.
