We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I don't think putting Russian military into disguise and face masks acting like thugs will work for them in Alaska. The thing is almost everyone in Alaska drives around and walks around with a gun. Putin knows this thug intimidation thing isn't going to work on an armed population. You have to disarm them first before you can enslave them. And before you disarm them you must make them all register their guns so you know who has them and where to go to take the guns if they don't turn them in. We aren't there yet. Obama and the Democrats are trying but the Kulaks aren't cooperating.
they're going about it the wrong way (Obama and his cronies that is).
Putin may just be smart enough to support some sort of "Alaska Independence movement" which when it takes over calls in the Russian army for "protection against the American imperialists". After all, historically the Union sends in the army when a state tried to gain independence...
And gun registration? Just offer money in reward for registration instead of charging for it and most people will fight to be the first in line.
I should further clarify the basis of the 'joke' (though explaining a joke is a sure way to undermine the humor and kill the intended effect - a skill I'm quite adept with).
Ukraine is under siege mainly because a large number of ethnic Russians live there and don't like the pro-West turn the larger Ukrainian population prefer. However, most of these ethnic Russians live there because of Soviet era manipulation of the population - an attempt to 'Russianize' all the Soviets by transplanting as many people into the regions as they could. As certain regions, like Ukraine, tended to have greater opportunity, many Russians even moved there for jobs (with government approval, of course).
Putin's basis of judgment here is entirely fabricated on a truth (many Russians live there) and a lie (they don't have deep lineages with the region, nor do they NECESSARILY want Russians to lead them).
The article I linked to was a snarky attempt to show even the northern reaches of the US are, technically, ethnically 'Russian', giving Putin some kind of case to be made.
A mitigating factor, of course, is the contracts Russia has in the Crimea - as opposed to the contracts the US has in Alaska. We did, after all, buy it from them, just as Russia has 'bought' the access to the Crimea.
Honestly, I have no opinion about Ukraine except that we shouldn't be involved at all there, and I'm pissed the US backed the opposition (which is extremely corrupt and hired snipers to fire on the protesters and create a crisis). We even have our own Ambassador recorded and thumbing his nose at the 'friends we need now' - the EU.
The whole thing smells like every other Obama foreign policy disaster - stupidity.
