We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
My niece ended up in a general ed requirement called 'Liberal Arts' when she was in college. The class was actually about rap music or something. She ran into an ideological conflict with the instructor. I advised, she could stand her ground and probably be failed, or she could write whatever BS required, pass the class and never look back at the "liberal arts".
What's wrong with the liberal arts and the humanities? It is these classes are presented as examples of scholarship. And it really should be "The Vanities" these days.
I have to admit, this terrifies me. But then almost everything about academia terrifies me at this point. It's hard to image how much money and effort has gone into lowering the bar, into making the hurdle into mediocrity the goal.
At this point, the system is so infested with self serving dolts that believe their own crap - it's beyond saving. At one point, many years ago the people pushing this crap at least had an agenda - the dumbing down of America. Now, it's not lead by cynics and those wishing to see us fail, so much as it's infested by people who believe they're right.
At the risk of sounding like a reactionary (and I suppose I am one) the commies* won that round. The only hope now is to get kids out of public schools altogether.
And Universities - well there are probably a few that still have good STEM programs, but business, economics, and the liberal arts? It's all useless.
I've been looking for a term to describe the people who want to see the human race fail - thinking somehow it will be good for them. They're not commies - commies are useful idiots, they're not progressives - also useful idiots, fascist maybe, totalitarian for sure. Maybe authoritarian - but it seems too inclusive.
I guess I'm pretty reactionary too. I'm trying my hardest to discourage mine from going to college, but the teachers and "guidance counselor" (who insists on putting that M.Ed behind her name whenever it's in written form-I'm surprised she doesn't add it when she introduces herself, too) insist she HAS to go to college, or she'll end up living in the street.(Most of your successful people in business today, Don't have college degrees)
If she's that smart, than she should be able to succeed WITHOUT secondary education (unless she's going into a hard science or medical field) and since she doesn't know what she wants to do.. why should she go into debt to study useless crap?
and then there's that Univ. of TN Sex Week thing to ponder too.... Paying thousands of $ to send your kid to be instructed in masturbation and anal sex? I don't think so.
and as far as lowering the bar... the kids in high school, don't even bother attempting to care about learning.. they know they have a security net, as their parents sit on unemployment for 2yrs and move onto disability "benefits".
