We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"For the most part, a college education has more to do with expanding world views, developing critical thinking and problem solving skills, increasing a thoughtful, richer, and deeper knowledge base,.."
Silly me. I thought it had more to do with indoctrinating young skulls full of mush in leftist ideology.
Remember that poster of the guy standing in front of his 5-car garage with 5 expensive cars inside, with text indication this is what a college education is worth? And then the squeals of OUTRAGE that anyone would would make such a crass poster and comparison? I do, fondly.
My career takes me to colleges and universities almost weekly. I'm generally unimpressed with the vast majority of academics that I meet and am amazed with their intellectual laziness. It seems that most spend their days trying to justify their existence to young, impressionable students (and their parents) who are easily intimidated by the faculty.
I tell my students here at Santa Clara University to consider majoring and studying what they really love and discover how the remarkable gift of higher education (a gift that very few in the world actually get by the way) can be best used to give them a foundation and experience for a rich and fulfilling life.
The only life that scam will give students is a life enslaved to a non-dischargeable debt.
