We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Head Start is just one more useless, expensive federal boondoggle. It has a constituency, however, and nobody really wants to be "against the children." It was a failed and possibly destructive experiment which devolved into federal babysitting with unionized babysitters.
The wisdom of Reagan: "...a government program is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth!"
I just read this post by Jay Nordlinger at NRO. He used Head Start as an example and offered this user comment, which is telling on so many levels
[quote]A reader of that column wrote,
Have you tried telling liberal friends that Head Start is a waste and a distraction and should be ended forthwith? I have, and you can guess what the responses are. I mentioned the program’s huge cost and complete lack of lasting effects to a friend who is professionally involved in early-childhood education. She is, by the way, a bright woman and one I admire . . . Her response was, “At least it’s nice that someone is paying attention to poor kids.”
This is a typical response and is Reason Number 2,923 that I started identifying as a neoconservative with Burkean tendencies: the discovery that to most leftists the point of a program is not whether it’s effective and at what cost but making leftists feel good about themselves and morally superior to their opponents./quote]
My understanding is that Head Start is for the most part staffed by parents of Head Start children. Vocabulary deficient adults teaching an enrichment program for vocabulary deficient children is a setup for failure. It is a "jobs for the gals" program. Had Head Start been staffed by college educated instructors, the outcome might have been different.
