We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I went to high school in CA in the late 80s. It was a well-known fact that if you were Asian and applied to the engineering program at U.C. Berkeley that competition was incredibly stiff. Too many Asian applicants. Therefore, some Asian friends of mine tried to circumvent the system by applying for other majors and hoping to transfer in to engineering at a later date.
Or they would apply to other schools in the UC system hoping they could transfer eventually.
Why would there be such a question at all on any form in a country that claims that race doesn't matter there?
The very fact that they ask means they're discriminating against someone, as if they didn't take the results into account they'd not have to ask the question.
And even if they don't deny Asians based on race, if they give preferential treatment to say blacks or amerindians (I'll never use the term "native americans" as it's in itself a racist term, racist against all others born in the Americas and not even correct historically as the amerindians are not the first inhabitants of the continent) despite lower scores they are discriminating against Asians as acceptance should depend on academic credentials only, not filtered to "racially correct" ratios.
We had much the same here with government hiring procedures.
By giving preferential treatment to blacks "in order to create a healthy racial ratio" the government ended up discriminating on all others based on skin colour by hiring blacks exclusively for years, despite court orders to stop the practice (as everywhere, the government thinks itself above the law here).
It was only when the results of the scheme, massive corruption, rapid increase in criminals being hired without sufficient background checks, underqualified people being hired in large numbers, were exposed, that they had to backpedal (those results all came about from hiring blacks indiscriminately because not enough of them with the right credentials ever applied to fill all jobs, the attempted 50% black ratio being about 10 times higher than the percentage of blacks in society here).
