We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
America is not a democracy, it is a representative republic. But it doesn't act like that either. American government represents corporations bankers and special interest way more than it represents "the people".
The US Government is a corporation.
The US Government has a greater income from investments than it does taxes.
I agree with your statement of bankers and to some degree corporations as well, but what are special interests other than aggregated common interests of people?
The NRA is a special interest of people with the common interest in protecting 2nd amendment rights. The ACLU is a special interest of people with the common interest in protecting 1st amendment rights. Special interests are an important way for people with common interests to make their interests known and impact policies.
Chomsky is an ass, a red diaper baby Marxist socialist ass. Generally if he says something it not only isn't true but is intended to harm this country and not help.
Yeah, the government doesn't want the banks and big corporations to fail. So what is the answer, let them fail? In 2009 I would have been in favor of letting the "to big to fail" banks and insurance companies go into bankruptcy. Ditto for GM and any other corporation that couldn't hack it. But the politicians were literally terrified of another great depression probably worse then the last one. They didn't "fix" it they merely postponed it with the hope they could soften the crash. They have! But we ARE in a depression. There are long lines of people waiting for government handouts just as there were in the 30's but now they are virtual lines as we send them EBT cards and other "free stuff". Make no mistake we ARE in a depression, the talk of the economy getting better is pure BS. It isn't going to get better until and unless we allow it to "reset". Let the failing companies fail, let the people who cannot or will not pay their debts go bankrupt, let the speculators and ambitious people pick up the homes and businesses for 10 cents on the dollar and THEN we can begin the long slog back to prosperity. But until then all we are doing is kicking the can down the road and with our borrowing and printing of money setting us up for the mother of all inflation. The government cannot and will not ever pay off this huge debt. What will happen is each of us in a hundred different ways will pay it off with inflation. We will pay more for food, health care, transportation and all the necessities of life because our government choose to borrow and print trillions in the vain hope that they could buy their way out of another great depression. So enjoy it while you can and go out and buy a few extra cans of beans and bags of rice because one day soon either it won't be available or you won't be able to afford it.
We will therefore conclude with the perhaps unforeseen result, that democracy, when crowned with power, seeks rather what it consders the well-being of the community than the liberty of the individual.
It was a great advantage when tyranny had one head and one neck; but what axe will relieve us from the tyranny of the majority? Foreign conquest was an evil; but it commonly took only our flocks and herds and left ourselves in liberty.
Democracy is great among free people who respect the freedom of others. But democracy is a procedure, and it can lead to bad outcomes when so many have so little integrity. It does, however, have the feature of facilitating the bloodless turnover of would-be tyrants. Except as we see it practiced today when such Democratic tyrants seek to inhibit the ability of the people to act and also when the so-called opposing parties agree on one thing, that they should be in power with minimal jostling.
The Tea Party movement terrified them. Not just Democrat but useless Republican as well. And the reason the harassment of the Tea Party by the IRS continues is that it is supported by the highest reaches of both parties for they fear, they fear, The People. Not the rabble who ramble the streets in futility but the people who took a day off work, showed up on the Mall. The people who left their national mall cleaner than the government keeps it (even with all the tax dollars.
