We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Of the 33 states granted a waiver (from No Child Left Behind) last year, 27 now have different achievement goals for different groups of students. And the Obama administration fully supports this measure, “as long as the low-performing students are required to make greater rates of progress, so that the gap between struggling students and high-achieving students is cut in half over six years.”
Different performance standards depending on skin tone and eye shape? They have gone insane. With the President being 50/50 white/black, to what standards should he be held? I suppose he should be held to the lower dark standards, because that's his skin tone.
Well, you could base the different expectations and tracks on student IQs, like it used to be done and what Binet invented the IQ test for.
The downside is that the slow track will be over-represented by blacks and Mexicans and the fast track over-represented by whites and Asians because these groups differ in mean IQs.
A real scientist/physician would know that the races vary internally as well as among themselves and that Obama is a very high IQ black (110 is often surmised) and a well above average IQ person.
We cannot possibly get anywhere in education without recognizing human biodiversity and the fact that the races (real, biological, genetically-determined entities) differ on both average (which produces so-called "relative disparity") and at the extremes (which gives us Frederick Douglas and Barak Obama).
What's next, separate but equal schools? Is this 2013 or 1953? This is progress? At the elite Punahou School that our "white African" president attended as a teen-ager, students are held to the same high academic standards regardless of their race or national origin. To get more, expect more. As a matter of faith, I find it hard to accept that any student, regardless of background, starts out in life with the goal of being an uneducated dummy.
Well, since Obama identifies as "black" he would be held to the lower "black" standards, just as George Zimmerman identifies as "Hispanic" so therefore his self defense was a hate crime. Or the Harvard professor cum Senator who identified as Cherokee when it was to her advantage and because she had the cheekbones for it.
Call it soft bigotry if you will. I think it is a small acceptance of reality. The problem with our beloved "melting pot" is a broadening of the distribution curve of ability skewed towards the left. You can create standards where a large proportion of blacks and Mexicans fail or you can create standards that don't challenge a large proportion of whites and Asians. It is silly to think there's a standard that will work sufficiently for both.
