We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
First impression .... seems that introductions that require as much time as the address itself (half the total), and then the intro to the speech requiring another one-third of the remaining time in simply (??) defining what liberal education is (and that having to be read by the distinguished elder lest he get it wrong), with then the remaining 3 minutes being all that's available for the "meat" of the address itself ..... has pretty much told the whole story ..... not much substance of use to the world that's trying to get something done. Let's talk about it ....pay me? Philolosic analysis ???? Refer to the first topic of the day ....the value of an advanced education these days....hmmmmm
You really have to watch the whole lecture. He doesn't get going on the sorry state of the modern "liberal" education until the middle of part 3. But he's quite devastating in his description of it.
It is time we did away with the university. Set knowledge free. Or more specifically the conferment of "club" membership.
A man can toil in manual labor all his life while expanding his horizons through reading. He can comprehend and write of lofty subjects where his limits have no end.
But it is only the possession of parchment paper that credit is given. Even if the holder can articulate little of what his professors hand fed his privileged mind.
But there are benefits to a liberal arts education. You meet new people, live among them, fuck a few or more of them, and up the end of your time, you are a Ring Knocker. One of them, part of the group. Assuming you do not take up wrong attitudes or speak on disfavored topics.
