I think Georgetown qualifies as an elite school. As a private school, I think they can take whoever they feel like taking.

Still, this story must upset some people, and some alums: Georgetown University, a cover-up?

I think you are right B, and G-town should admit whomever they want.

I believe this exposes the admissions charade at institutions of higher learning for what it is.

I hope we hear how this story turns out.

Admissions has long been a charade at the elite schools. When I was a junior in high school, I worked at a movie theater. A co-worker at the movie theater was a senior applying to colleges. She was a straight-A student who had taken a lot of AP courses, a Merit Finalist, had a part-time job at the theater, was in the chorus, debate club, and other clubs. She was also a skilled seamstress and pianist. All of the Ivy League and Seven Sisters schools turned her down. She didn't let the rejections get her down. She went on to a state school and then to medical school.

Georgetown is a Catholic-Jesuit university and as such is bound to treat all applicants justly. So, "admit whomever they want" cannot employ racist and sexist methods. On the other hand, Georgetown repudiated its Catholic roots long ago and does not feel bound by any morality.

Well, there is the little matter of applications fees paid by those applicants summarily trashed. It might be a reach but there is an implicit contract that the application will be given due consideration and not thrown out on criteria that could and should have been disclosed to potential applicants before they applied. It would be easy for an applicant to determine that they are a)white, b)male, c)interested in math and then determine applying to Georgetown was a waste of application fee money. There was nothing subjective to the criteria used in the application processing.

Then, Georgetown is now known as a school for white males with interests in math and science not to apply to. It would be interesting to see which students and what majors go on to become successful alumni who donate to their alma mater. It would also be interesting to see what the demographics are of the current contributing alumni.

Georgetown receives federal funds - lots of federal funds. They cannot admit whoever they want. If they want to intentionally exclude white males, they should refuse all federal funds.

If the allegations are true, a class action fraud suit for application fees and time losses should be filed. Maybe also a class action tort suit for intentional infliction of emotional harm.

If Georgetown intentionally wants to just exclude all smart people regardless of race, gender, religion, creed, etc. from their math and science programs, and give preference to people who are dumb as rocks, I suppose that is OK, as long as they don't misrepresent that good grades or scores are used in selection criteria. To clearly avoid fraud, they should notify prospective applicanrts that those with low grades and scores below "xxx" will be admitted first ,and those with grades and scores above "yyy" will be automatically rejected.

Paraphrasing Glen Reynolds, if the allegations are true, parents of kids who aren't dumb as rocks should consider whether having their children apply to Georgetown is a waste of money or parental malpractice.

Isn't Georgetown where Nancy Pelosi found a law student who wants the federal government to pay $3000 for her birth control while in law school? So haven't parents already been publically warned not to send their children there?

Wasn't it Sandra Fluke? IIRC she was about 30, so perhaps not more feminist than someone who allegedly tosses white male university applications in the trash.

On reflection, shouldn't taking application fees and trashing white males' applications becasue they are white males (whether or not they are in the calculus or chess clubs) be a hate crime? It causes, and is intended to cause, injury, distress, and economic loss as a result of unbridled, outright hate for white males.

On further reflection, is it parental malpractice and/or a waste of money if parents want their children to have a $3000 sex life at a university? Perhaps some parents want to vicariously enjoy their children having a life of the gonads, rather than a life of the mind in exchange for their tuition payments? Who is to judge - all cultures are equal except western civilization, which is evil. Perhaps there is a big market for such parents which universities need to tap into when the "higher education" bubble bursts?

How's all this New World Order/Diversity/We Are the World-We Are the Children stuff working for everyone? Tired of it yet?

Why in the heck does Georgetown have a person of that age and experience in such a position and lacking formal management? Dumb. One more school off the list for my grandchildren (as if Fluke wasn't sufficient).

Maybe grounds for a class-action suit from rejected white men. If their applications were tossed in the trash instead of being considered, they should be refunded their application fees.

Refunds aren't much of a deterrent. What about a class action suit for hate crime, blocking receipt of federal funds, enjoining future discrimination against smart white males (who are a minority after all), punitive damages, separation of governance of and admissions to science, math and engineering from the "Liberal humanities" governance. (sociology, psychology, etc aren's sciences...)
