You are absolutely correct "it would have been cheaper to simply provide an annual Medical Savings Account and catastrophic insurance policy for each of the uninsured". But it was never about health care. It was always about government control and a platform to socialize the country. This is the Democrat party exposed. Not suprisingly it is indistinguishable from early communist and fascist revolutions in the early 20th century. Our problem is that the left effectively turns out 98% of their supporters to vote and the right makes almost no effort to turn out voters and thus perhaps 50% of those on the right actually vote. The politicians on the right, displaying their enormous intelligience, have decided that the secret to get elected is to "out-democrat" the democrats. So they have focused their effort on amnesty and gun control as a way to steal voters from the Democrats. In the process they are alienating their base almost guaranteeing the turnout in 2014 for the right will be even lower. Lindsey Graham and John McCain are the ringleaders in this treasonous choice but they do not stand alone. I feel like the Republicans have become lemmings rushing towards the cliff. It does indeed appear to me that the Republicans and thus the right are committing suicide and taking the constitution with it.
