Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Thursday, February 21. 2013Women Outperforming Men in CollegeThe study says: Beginning as early as kindergarten, the authors explained, girls have better average social and behavioral skills than boys, and that relates to girls’ higher average grades at each stage of school and why girls are more likely to earn a degree.Hmm. Boys are not girls?

Girls can sit still longer at an earlier age. That gives them an edge from the git-go in school environment that values quiet and focused attention to what the teacher wants to do.
Boys can focus just fine, its just that they don't always focus on the topic at hand. Advantage: girls. The ability of boys to concentrate effectively tends to catch up in late high school, but by then the girls have the track record that colleges desire. Hence the numerical advantage of girls to boys in most four year colleges. http://catosdomain.com/?p=13489
It really has more to do with the anti-male PC liberal culture and the war on all that is reasonable that has been waged against us these last 50 years or so. Most of what goes on in school these days is pure nonsense. It is often send that just when something becomes obsolete, females take it over. So it is with the fare we call "education". It has nothing to do with boys ability to "concentrate". What a preposterous notion. Do you have any? Do you know the history of civilization? Here is a hint. about 99% of the real knowledge under study was create by men. The whole notions of those fields of studies are make creations. Go to you schools chess club, if it is lucky enough to have one, and have a look at what the "gals" do. The boys are smart enough to know that it is all nonsense and local "politics". The boys can see through this nonsense. The girls, as usual care only about superficial externalizes. "behavioral issues" indeed This is all such nonsense. Most degrees these days are worthless. The Left has turned college into a sort of finishing school and a gatekeeper to the Left's Nomenklatura. It has aboslutely nothing to do with real learning. If colleges had the standards they once had, the kind I have 50 years ago, few women could really get in. I know for I hire a lot of young people. What is really sad is this degradation of civilization in the name of "equality". If men and women were "equal" in creatively and intellectual ability and accomplishment then the history of the world would be radically different. This is all a sign of the rot of our society, not some sort of "progress" of women. Our competitors do not make this same mistake. You can take that to the bank. Most of these women will be in made up postilions doing made up work, and generally in the "vampire" industries law, banking, insurance, academia, etc. Most will be out of the work force by middle age, and most will be lucky to be even mediocrities. Meanwhile they are displacing men in fields that women will in the end have no real success in. It will all end badly, and those talking about the advantages of women in education: will be eating crow. It will be worse for the women then the men as they will no longer be held in high regard. feminism is essentially parasitic. Eventually they will run out of males to support their fantasies; society will lose respect for them. The creation of a vibrant civilization has nothing to do with apple polishing or regurgitating home work. It requires intelligence, creativity, depth, real productivity and courage. All male virtues and rarely female ones. This nation is headed down, and feminism and racial AA are two of the leading causes. All according to the plans of the Left. You do not have to look any farther than Obama to see what the consequences of this will be, Yeah right. Wander down to your local engineering school (physics, math, computer science, etc) and what do you find? Almost no women. So what if a bunch of them get english degrees? Let them go do their thing. Whatever.
Of course this is what the full article claims is the most pressing problem in education today, not that so many men are dropping out of college just as women are moving in. That lack of perspective and commitment to true gender equity in education is all that you need to know about public education today. For the sake of future generations, the war on boys needs to be considered as serious an issue for society as is the glass ceiling for women.
When you optimize an environment for girls, they will, surprise, succeed more than boys.
Success in school is a mirage as to what will happen in the world. That is the fatal conceit of those who tie their future on grades in school or degrees.
As others have noted, the hard sciences are still dominated by men, as are the hard, dirty jobs that are overlooked, but still important to the physical world we live in. When your car breaks down, chances are a man will fix it. Most construction is still done by men. I'm not saying women don't or can't, it doesn't appeal to them and it is physically much harder for them to compete with men, even lower educated ones. Why do they always use grades as the defining level of "best"? Seems like whenever you read an article about this topic; the "girls are better" crowd always uses grades as a "who is better" determining factor.
Why can't we look at kids in a wholistic sense....how that blob of protoplasm interacts with their environment? Maybe if they looked at how well adjusted the kid is; then they could help the kids that AREN'T well adjusted. Folks, you need to start having a new way of thinking whenever you read something put out by the intelligentsia....you need to start thinking the OPPOSITE of what they print! Steve Many years ago while pursuing my bs degree I had a front row seat to how women get such good grades. One of the few women in the class would run her progam on the computer and take the printout and card deck into the teachers office. After about 15-20 minutes she would come out and make the corrections and run it again. Oddly the instructor would lock his door for these "consultations" She got a good grade but moved on, either she wasn't in computer science or she decided to switch her major I'm not sure which. The instructor was disappointed though...
This is merely demonstrating a mental disorder I call Plurocausitive Attribution Syndrome. It is a condition characterized by attributing better outcomes for men, white, and heterosexuals to systematic discrimination, while at the same time attributing better outcomes for women, non-Caucasian people, and homosexuals to inherent superiority.
Hence, the lack of black people in the NHL is due to racial discrimination, but the preponderance of black people in the NBA is due to their natural athletic superiority. Or, the lack of women in STEM careers is due to systemic gender discrimination, but the over-representation of women in higher education is due to women's naturally superior intellect. I could be absolutely wrong about this, but I think there has been a major change in the school day since I was in grade school in the "60s when there was lots of recess that consisted of running around outside, music classes, art classes. Lot's of variety in the day. We memorized poems and the multiplication tables, we sat at our desks and worked on reading worksheets. We also put on plays and learned how to play the song flute.
Today for some reason boys have to be given drugs to sedate them so they will sit still for 6 hrs. I don't see this as an improvement. ok. i was in grade school in the 50's not the 60's. Jack Benny was 39 for years.
There is another new study out there (or perhaps it is buried in this one); the version that I just read last week tells us that one of the reasons that boys do not do as well as girls in the lower grades is because teachers include a personal judgment as to the social grace of the individual. In other words if a boy gets an A- on a math paper and a girl does the same thing, the boy will get marked down to a c+ or B- because he probably isn't as sweet and caring as the girl ! Maybe not as obedient, maybe not as gracious, but those are the qualities that a female teacher will include in analyzing the worth of the grade. It starts early and I for one am terrified.
Isn't it at all possible that women are just good at something valuable?
We forgot that the boys are drugged right from the start with ritalin and other substances from the pill of the month club. Ritalin use can prevent a young man from receiving a commission in the US military.
It is no wonder that boys are falling behind. I watched an interesting thing develop in my neck of the woods. I am the mother of a son (young man now)who attended a community college in my state. He was left to perform his school work as I was many years ago. Do your work, if you don't understand, ask questions, stay after class, pursue the information. It was your responsibility to show up, and do the work. Your reward was a degree that you earned.
Now, contrast that with the females that were attending this same school at this same time. They were contacted either by phone or email (sometimes both)about when class met, where it met and if there were any changes. They were handed a sheet with sources of information for their projects. They were contacted by the teachers throughout their projects to see if the teachers could be of any assistance. They were given loud and frequent praise throughout their pursuit of a degree and were told which teachers and which classes most fitted their "circumstances". You could not have more babied these young female adults more if you put a diaper on them. And I saw all this watching and listening to my son, other young men, women friends and neighbors. Very eye-opening. I also had the chance to READ the papers of both the young men and women......unbelievable! |
