We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Hey, if you've been hoarding Krugerrands since Nancy Pelosi hove into view, have I got good news for you! Marketwatch says gold's at $17,727 an ounce right now. Think of all the ammo and beans you can buy with a pound or two of your wife's melted jewelry today.
Into each life some rain must fall, though. I wonder what a gallon of gas is going to cost tomorrow now that a barrel of oil is worth $9228. I'd fill up today before they change the signs, if I were you. Marketwatch. For the Lulz.
So i'm awake about 2 a.m. one morning in early 2009 (often find that i'm awake when suffering a bout of insomnia) and in order to cascade the misery i log on to my trading account at a well-known if smaller brokerage --and i have over eight million dollars more than the peanuts i was expecting to see. Log out and back in again, it's eleven million too much. Rinse repeat, it's four million too much.
I've figgered out by then there's some journaling going on, and i leave it alone. Next day it's back to normal, with no transactions history of them millions of bucks. Email the broker asking why i had all that dough the night before, and he said, 'oh, those things happen'.
But i wonder, had i been of a certain sort, could i have transferred the journal entries to an outside account? I asked the guy and he wasn't sure, maybe i could've. He's an old friend --wasn't shining me on --he really had no idea, or felt he had to cover for the company.
Either way, needless to say, i was filled with confidence in the granite-like sobriety of the system.
True story. One day I had an extra $10K in one of my money market accounts. I was curious and decided to just keep it there to see what happened. Stayed there for two days.
As it happened, I went over to visit my brother and help him with his 1955 Chevy pickup restoration. I get there and he's on the phone bitchin' to somebody about a missing $10K from his money market account. (We had accounts at the same brokerage.)
Sure enough, I told him to have the agent check my account and there it was - they had posted it to the wrong account.
