Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Assault on free speech

From Chicago Boyz on the easily-offended: What Century is This?



The real criterion, of course, would be propensity to violence. If a group shows a propensity to violence when its icons are criticized, then it would in practice receive special protection under the 21st-century blasphemy prohibitions. Those advocating for such rules either don’t understand the incentive system this would create, or don’t care.


Last Wednesday, Zbigniew Brzezinski–yes, that Zbigniew Brzezinski, the one from the Carter administration–added his voice to the chorus of those calling for restrictions on free speech:


“I would like us to make it more explicit to the Muslim world: we not only condemn (the YouTube video), but if there are evil forces at work trying to provoke violence between us and you, we have the obligation to investigate and crack down.”



Be careful, Zbig. You are making me very angry with that kind of speech. Maybe we need to crack down on that kind of disturbing speech.

But what are we to do?

We have, thanks to modern communications and intercourse, a resurgent global Jihad perpetrated by fanatical madmen using I slam as an excuse. Much the same as Mr. Jefferson faced. But facing down ther evry real threat to our civilization is not as simple as launching Lt. Presley O'Bannon to go kick some ass.

We welcome them into our country to take advantage of our sacred freedoms and they use those very freedoms (assisted by progressive lawyers) to bring our very way of life down.

As a patriotic American, I cannot abide this.

And thus the conundrum. And it isn't just 'them', nor just 'progressive lawyers'. It's the entire progressive, socialist, marxist assault, internal as well as external, for the last hundred or so years.

How do we keep our freedoms without committing cultural suicide. We keep handing them the knife to slit our throat, because we have to, we can't help it. Because if we act otherwise we follow the fault of all who have gone before.

Or something. I'm not articulate enough to express my brain.

... damn sure articulate enough to've hit the heart of the paradox that has no good answer --tho it surely does have a 'best' answer:

If we lose our sovereignty, we can't choose to go back to what we were before we had to rise above our principles for awhile.

I think Lincoln used that phrase ''rise above principles'' at some point, in reference to the national emergency.

Or, in a less serious vein, as Bruce Lee once said...

"Obey the principles without being bound by them."

I guess Zbig doesn't want to talk about his recent role in egging on the Russo-Georgia war --which worked out just peachy for Vlad Putin's strategic position on the Persian Gulf and Caspian basin-to-Europe pipelines side of the winter-impassable Caucasus mountain range.
